Hi everyone,

My GF really enjoys puzzle games. Word puzzle games, especially. One of her favorites is TextTwist for the PalmOS. She loved 7th Guest and 11th Hour.

It seems that good puzzle games for the PC are uncommon. There are more 1st person shootem games than you can shake a stick at, but where are the good puzzle games?

Can any of you suggest some titles I can pick up for my GF?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Has she tried any of the Myst games? I think there are five of them, and the last I heard they were working on another. As far as I know those are the last of that type of game.

Initially, I thought you meant puzzle games like the ones at popcap.com. Those are freakin' addicting! It seems like every spare minute I get I'm over there playing Zuma or Big Money.

Oh, and I always loved the 7th Guest. All except for that damn Othello-type game. That was freaking hard. But I just loved the whole atmosphere of it all, and I can still hear that main theme in my head. I have to find that VHS tape I have of the making of the game. I don't know where I got that or where it went to...

*edit*
Oh, I forgot! I've heard very good things about Syberia and its sequel. The second one in particular seems to be a visually pleasant game.

Darwinia rocks. Since starting to play it I have spent far too many hours at the computer when the rest of the house is in bed. And soon it will be available through Steam.

As I remember, 7th Guest and 11th Hour were just collections of PopCap-type games embedded in an uninteresting and/or poorly told story. Kind of a half-step between a puzzle game (like PopCap-type games, Lemmings, or Bubble Bobble) and adventure games (like Zork or Space Quest).

As such, it's kind of hard to tell which sort of game she likes. Myst also sorta lives in that area, but leans more towards the adventure game. I'd try that (you can get the original remastered for modern OSes these days) and see if she likes it. If so, I'd steer her more towards the adventure game side. If not, more towards the puzzle game side.

In either case, Gamespot has a listing of games by type and it includes both adventure and puzzle.

While it's more like Monkey Island than 7th Guest, there's Out from Boneville, which our own Loren from this BBS worked on.

I think the games she really likes are the popcap type ones. In fact, I got her Zuma for her Palm Pilot and she loves it. I had forgotten about Myst. I saw a collection of Myst at Best But, so I might pick that up for her.

I also hadn't heard of Syberia or Out from Bonneville. I'm going to read some reviews of those.

Thanks for the great suggestions you guys, its been a really big help!

I was going to say the Myst series as well, but since that's taken I'll recommend Grim Fandango. I enjoyed playing it quite a bit. The story line is engaging, and most of the puzzles are good.
