Anyone know? Google and MSKB aren't helping. The best hint I've seen is that it might be in GPEDIT.MSC but I can't find which setting. I don't see an option in control panel/power for it.

Apparently, if you disable it in the BIOS, Windows will no longer offer it as an option.

Why do you want to disable it anyway?

Are you just annoyed that your machine is going into standby mode? I thought you could control that in the basic power options in the control panel...

I'm sure he wants his users to not be able to put the machine in standby.

Could be something like that it prevents anti-virus from scanning yet doesn't do a startup scan.

Actually, it's just because I want to be able to press ENTER on that dialog box instead of ALT-U.

I can get to that dialog box with a very specific set of keystrokes (Ctrl-esc, esc, alt+f4), I'm just trying to save the extra alt-U at the end. Back in the old days, I used to be able to press Enter for the last keystroke.

Anyhoo. The thread at Annoyances.org that Billy linked contained the exact solution:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ACPI\Parameters\
New Dword value: Attributes
Key Value: 0x70

Now I can go back to pressing Enter. Thanks, Billy!

Haha! That sounds exactly like the reason I would want something like this. At work, I'm still using Win2K, and I know that to shut down, all I have to press is "Start Key > up arrow > enter > enter" and it'll shut down (if that was the last item selected from the list, of course).

Tony, are you sure you have to press the Alt key? You could try just pressing U. I think that works too. It's not as good a target as the return key, but it works.

I wonder if there's a way to switch that option screen from the three icons to the drop-down box like in Win2K. I'm pretty sure it switches to it if you use the classic view for XP, but I wonder if there's a way to change that independantly...

Anyway, I'm glad you found a solution.

There is an option in the Control Panel to change back to the older style login window and that also changes the shutdown/logoff dialog. You lose the ability to do fast user switching however.

It doesn't, as far as I can see...

Wasn't in front of an XP system earlier so couldn't give exact instructions but now I'm home

Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Change the way users log on or off -> Use the Welcome screen. If you unselect that then it'll give you the older login and logoff/shutdown dialog boxes.

I actually like the new box better (with this registry modification), because now Enter is always shut down. Before, Enter was only shut down if that was the last thing you'd selected in that box.

Oh, and who was it that said "Start menu, up arrow up arrow"? Remember that pressing Alt+F4 with the taskbar focused is the same as shutting down. That's why Ctrl-Esc, Esc, Alt+F4 works. I think that's more elegant than up arrow, up arrow. It's what I've gotten used to. Sometimes I need to shut the system down when I've got no video (for instance, I'm messing with drivers or refresh rates or some such), and those keystrokes always work for me.
