The Dell's battery is dead which makes it useless as a portable pc. How feasible would it be to crack open the battery and replace the cells with rechargable AA batteries? Would this be crazy?

If it is a Lithium Ion based battery then don't do it. If you wire them incorrectly or they're not charged properly then it is possible for them to catch fire. Most of these batteries have a IC in them which monitors the battery and records stats so it might not work anyway.

You can buy fairly cheap Dell batteries on eBay. Don't know what the quality is like or even if they're real Dell batteries.

Try sticking it in the freezer overnight and trying it again in the morning.

Digikey sells replacement LiON, NiMH, and NiCad cells. So, yes, one could crack open the plastic and just replace the cells, and have a "new" condition pack for about $30 or so.

Cheers

That's probably a really bad idea with Lithium Ion cells. It's almost guaranteed to drop their voltage below the critical level where they can't be safely charged again.
