What is the easiest way to record phone conversations? I am having some problems with a car dealership and want to be able to record the conversation as proof of what they say to me.

Might be good to find out whether or not it's legal in your area first. You probably have to tell them you're recording.

Beyond that, I guess if you have a phone with a headphone jack (most cordless phones these days seem to), you could get the appropriate cables/adapters and route them into your computer, recording the audio with some recording software. I did this once to record a particularly humorous message a friend left on my voicemail.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think this will only get you their end of the conversation. That probably wouldn't help you much...

But here (UK) you need to tell the person you are recording them.

You can set some answering machines to do this. Have you checked if yours has this feature?

Or how about using something line Skype and make the call over VOIP and record the output, if that is possible?

Call them using a Nokia. With my old 6310i you just tap the left 'soft button' twice and it will record your conversation. The person at the other end would hear a beep every few seconds, but you could always tell them your battery was going flat or something!

This should work on any Nokia with a voice recorder in 'Extras' I guess. The quality is perfect of course, but you don't have much memory on that old phone. New generation ones probably have more recording time.

Best thing is you can just pull the recordings off the phone with Bluetooth as .wav files.

If you have a Treo, it seems there is a whole load of software out there that lets you do this too.

Yes. Find out about the legalities first. I believe in most states it's legal as long as one party (namely, you) know the call's being recorded. In some others, both parties have to know. Federal law requires that at least one party know, so it's not a restriction on you if it's an interstate call.

Or you could just ask our government for their copy of the conversation.

I believe there are software packages that can turn your modem (if you still have one) into answering machines with various mailboxes as well as record phone calls.. been long time since i have had a modem so havent used em just remember seeing em...
