I use EAC/LAME for my ripping/encoding, with VBR.

When the LAME screen is up, it shows rows of %%%% and **** for the varying encoding rates. It looks like the overall lengths of those rows is an indication of how much of the track is being recorded at the particular bit rate.

My question is... what do the %%%%s signify, and what do the ****s signify?

From the source code for lame, it appears that the '%' chars represent (roughly) this:

how often a special frame size/stereo mode commbination was used

So '%' represents Left/Right stereo mode frames, and '*' is everything else.

And the lengths of the bars indicate relative proportions of frames of each particular bitrate (ordinary histograms).

And the overall percentage of l/r vs. mid/joint encoding should be on the bottom row, at least it is with 3.97b2 or whatever the hydrogenaudio.org reccomended version was last week.
