Well I knew there was a risk but everyone said it was minimal, plus I needed hijack to run my Sony stalk Controller.

I used Tony's Logo Editor to flash the Kernel with the latest version to my Mk II player. Now it boots confirms hijack is present gets as far as trying to load the database and says:

"hda: disk error: irq timeout"

What gives?

That message is NOT related to Hijack.

Things to do:

(1) Don't Panic. Nothing bad has happened yet, so don't try and make something bad happen!

(2) Reflash Hijack again, and see if that cures it.

(3) Revert back to the original empeg kernel, and see what that does (available from the Hijack site) -- there is no need to reinstall the empeg software.

Cheers

Nah, I didn't panic, but I'm more worried about how I am going to install the Sony Stalk Controller if I can't get Hijack to work.

First of all, it is interesting that you said this isn't Hijack related. After I got my Empeg player back after the digital sound card install and booted it, I noticed that it took a long long time to boot after reaching the Loading music databases screen.

I reflashed the kernel and no dice. then reinstaled the original 2.00 consumer software release and no problems at all. Went back and tried to reinstall Hijack and exactly the same thing. It installs without any problem, gets to the loading music databases part and pops out with:

"hda: hard disk error: irq timeout"

But it only happens after installing Hijack not with the original Rio consumer software.

Any ideas? I realize hijack isn't essential, but I just had two Sony Controllers drop shipped to Hong Kong from the States by a friend so that I could install them with my players and two radio modules.

Paul.

Are you able to get into the hijack menu? (Hold the knob in for about one second)
You might play with the hdd detection setting.

If you're talking about the wired Sony StalkController that plugs into the radio module, you don't need Hijack for that.

Question / Observation: I notice that you mentioned that you are running the empeg consumer version. Could it be a software mismatch? Have you tried loading the empeg developer version in place, and then tried hijack?

Ah. I guess you want him to install the original kernel as downloaded from your site instead of reinstalling the consumer kernel. Correct?

Is there anything in hijack that would depend on the installation / software load of the full developer fileset instead of the consumer fileset? I know the kernel should not matter, but perhaps any of the other files? Just curious.

Also, make sure your download of Hijack is good. Delete the one on your hard drive and download it again just to be sure.

Not if you have a real Sony stalk: that's in the standard package.

HiJack is used to map keys if you are trying to say, map Ford control keys through the Sony stalk interface on the Tuner.

Okay,

First of all Mark, I'm sorry if anyone gave you a hard time, your steps are actually quite clear and it was I that misread them. I also appreciate that you do know exactly what you are talking about. Unfortunately these still have not solved the problem.

Reflashing Hijack hasn't worked.
Reflashing the original kernel from the Hijack site works.
Reflashing Hijack after installing the original kernel from the Hijack site still results in the same error.

I haven't yet tried the developer software version. Should I?

Hijack is installed, and I can enter the menu. I did not however find anything re HD Settings. Is it under another heading in the Hijack menu or is it therefore missing and could that have anything to do with the error.

A few anomolies for you:

Even though I installed the Hijack Kernel with the "boot with Rio personality" option chosen, the player still boots as Empeg with our little penguin friend.

Whilst I was in the process of checking this thread, I realized that if left long enough, the error message actually disappears and the player 'appears' to be fully functional including the Hijack menu. So is it just a glitch that I should ignore?

Oh good. Now, with the stock kernel, show us a boot log.

I'm asking for this, because I do know that Hijack is fussier about having working hardware than is the stock kernel -- so I want to see if there's anything failing to initialize..

Thanks

Alright, you've got me. I've been forced to show my ignorance. How do I show a boot log? Imagine you are explaining to the stupidest newbie on here and then imagine I have about 50% of that intelligence.

Also you said stock kernel, so do you want me to reflash using the original kernel from the Hijack site or the OEM software from the old Empeg site?

Step by step instructions please !!!

Paul.

I'm sorry. I can't figure this out. I connect my player up and reflash the kernel to the original which gives me no problems, I understand that. Now with the player still connected by serial I go into hyperterminal ... then what. Rebooting the player doesn't seem to do anything. Is there something I need to do in hyperterminal that initiates the reboot?

Paul.

From where you just described, just unplug the power from your empeg, and then plug it back in again.

Rebooting the player by pulling its plug should make a bunch of text flow down the screen in hyperterminal. If it doesn't, then something is wrong with your serial connection or with the way hyperterminal is configured.

Hyperterminal Readout which suggests there is a problem. Can anyone suggest what it might be?

Tony,

Some of those have happened in the past but few with any frequency save possibly the starting at a different song and I believe this is due to a wiring problem in the car which I have to isolate. That said this looks like something it would be worth doing anyway so I'll follow all the steps sometime over the next week when I have time and let you know if it works out. If not then it looks like it might only need a new drive which wouldn't be the end of the world.

Paul.
