I have an odd problem in my office. I have an attorney who is trying to download an excel file that is posted on this site (it's the first "By clicking here" link).

Clicking on that link opens a new window that contains a page with nothing but a bit of javascript that pops up the download for the file. In IE, this brings up the wonderful "Information bar." So I tell it to allow popups for this site. But when I try again, the javascript always pops up a new little window, but it just closes right away and never asks about saving the file.

It works properly in Firefox, so what's wrong with IE (besides everything else wrong with IE)? It seems like a dumb method to offer a file for download, but this seems to be an application issue.

For the time being I've been able to view the source to find the URL for the excel file, and download the document for him. I don't want to do that every week, though.

Thanks for your help.

In IE for me, it actually opens the spreadsheet inside the IE window. Maybe the plugin-ness of Excel is broken? See if you can download it and then open it up with a "file:" URL within IE and see what happens.

Hmmm... If it opens for you cleanly, it might be that there is a cached / open version of the file blocking the download. I have seen this happen a few times. If you can, rename the file by a character (or clear cache / close all applications) and try again.

The page that opens the xls file has some broken javascript in it (it tried to use a variable that it hasn't declared). Firefox is ignoring the broken-ness of the javascript and IE isn't.

If you turn on script error reporting in IE you get to see the error. Most people will have it turned off, so it will just silently fail.

Not much you can do about it unless the website fixes their Javascript or he starts using Firefox instead.

Thanks, I suspected it was something to do with the site. I love that the method they have to view the file is not very good, and on top of that it's broken.

Just give 'em all Firefox. You're in a position of power now?

I am! I may suggest it anyway. Hell, I can make it easy on him. I'll install Firefox and just have a link on his desktop that'll use it to view the page instead of IE.

I'd make them all switch, but these are attorneys. They use WordPerfect.

Sigh. What IS it with attorneys and WP? They are the only group of people that use it consistently that I've ever met. You'd think that all the people that have problems opening docs from them would influence their decision, but apparently not.

Reveal Codes. And probably templates that no one wants to be legally responsible for porting to word.

I was just at a sperm donation clinic doing a service call yesterday and was shocked to find them using word perfect.

Sperm donation clinic? Service call? TMI...

I've asked people before why they still use WordPerfect and the answer is the before mentioned templates and that it does everything they need so they don't want to change it. You could up/downgrade them to the latest bloatware Word release.

My wife's an attorney on Capitol Hill. Her office (they draft legislation) still mostly uses an old text interface vesion of XyWrite. They had so many custom features and macros built into it, they refused to change for years.

They are now in the second year of a new, custom built replacement: it's pretty, but buggy as hell. They still tend to go back to XyWrite for any of the longer bills.

One way it was explained to me is that early on all the secretaries started on WP, and they just followed the upgrade path. Then when the attorneys started using computers (well, most of them, I have a few here who don't use them), they used WP because that's what their secretaries used. I think they're trying these days to switch over, but it's hard since we work with other law firms who also use WP. I think we have an application whose only function is to convert documents from one program to the other.

I'd like to mention that I love WordPerfect......5.1. After that it seemed like they were trying to go toe to toe with Word and the bloatware started piling on. I still think reveal codes is fantastic. Considering all the crap formatting that Word shoves down your throat, something like reveal codes would be the greatest thing to ever grace that application.

Anyone remember the command "get we"?

Brownie points for whoever remembers what it did, more specifically, why.

Only if used on an ASR Teletype 33...

(ASR stands for "Automatic Send/Receive" - "automatic" as in from/to paper tape instead of keyboard/printer).

The only paper tape I wrote on had to do with programming an numerically controlled mill. Wasn't much fun having to type in that whole tape in one go without errors.

OK, It reboots the computer. More specifically, it calls the memory count, which flushes the memory. Instantly.
