I've not even heard of any new "mp3 formats" besides CBR, and VBR, there is only one stanard format. and unless it's signifigantly better than current stanard, audio quality, size, and copyability, i have no intention on going through the effort of re-encoding my current collection.

He is probably referring to MP3 Pro, discussed in this thread.

I also have no intention of reripping the 90 CD's worth of stuff I have (90 MP3 CD's), but just as I once changed from 192 CBR to VBR 1 and Lame, MP3 Pro is just a natural progression.

MP3 Pro is what I was refering to

Just interested if it is going to be supported by the player as I am about to ripp my CD collection and just wanted to do it right the first time.

Any other pointers would be helpful.

Cheers

Jamie

Well according to what was said, MP3 Pro files can play on any MP3 player, but unless it's MP3 Pro compatible, you will loose the quality benefits of MP3 Pro. I don't think an encoder is out yet though, so you might as well pick your current favorite and go with it.

I use Audiograbber togther with Lame 3.87 set to VBR 1. Seems to work fine, and with the newest Audiograbber, it supports ID3 V2.

Right.

To clarify what Drakino just said: Whether or not the Empeg will support this new "MP3 pro" format is a moot point. There's no encoders for it out yet, so you wouldn't be able to create these kinds of files even if you wanted to.

So if you're encoding your collection now, your choice is between WMA and regular MP3, what encoder you want to use, and what bit rate you want to encode at.

(Of course, WMA is not yet supported on the Empeg, but it will be when the 1.10 software comes out. If you want to listen to your tunes on the Empeg now, then your only choice is regular MP3.)
