What is the consensus currently on using v1 or v2 ID3 tags? I am about to start ripping my whole collection, I want to use the right tags to work mainly with the Empeg, but also for compatability with other players. What advantages does v2 give besides longer names. I realize it can do lyrics and stuff. How many people are actually using the advanced featueres of ID3v2 and which features? I suspect that most people are just taking advantage of longer file names, and probably this is all the Empeg may or may not be able to take advantage of anyway.

Anyone?

In the case of the Empeg, the only thing that V2 tags will gain you is the longer field names. The extra V2 fields aren't used by the Empeg.

Note that if you use V1 tags, you can add more than 30 characters in a field after the song has been dropped onto Emplode. The 30 character limit only exists in the original ID3 tag, not in the Empeg's database.

Your decision between V1 and V2 is therefore only relevant to whatever other third-party software you intend to use with the MP3 files. Does the third-party software support V2 or not?

Currently I am ripping everything with both tags in the file. If the name of a field is too long, it gets clipped in the V1 tag, but I find that fine since every program I play MP3's through can read the ID3V2 tags, including emplode.

The longer field support has been very useful. But I really haven't taken advantage of any of the other V2 tags, as it seems to be mass chaos on what is supported in each player/program.
