I suppose you could send them a brick with "eff you" written in crayon, but the FedEx account was probably set up using a stolen credit card or account details.

I thought about doing that after already leaving negative feedback. If I hadn't already left feedback, I probably would have put a few cinder blocks in an oversized box.

When that happened to me ebay pretty much wouldn't do anything. They wouldn't even refund me the auction fee.

Why would they want to arrange the shipping is there another scam besides trying to get the phone for free ?

Certainly report it to PayPal though. I know that eBay bought them, but I think they will be slightly more interested in the fraud / spoofing of their receipt process.

My nigerian attack didn't involve paypal. When mine happened they were still trying the western union scam.

Tsk-tsk, sic transit gloria mundi!. From $125.000.000 of late oil minister's embezzled funds to a mere phone!

Your reports of success with this phone on the Cingular network led me to get one! Now that you've replaced it I'm wondering what phone has taken its place. I'm thinking of the new Nokia E61.

I guess I might be next in line for the Nigerians when I put my A780 up on Ebay in a few weeks...

As I'm sure you're aware, this scam has little to do with the initial thousands or millions of dollars or the cell phone. It's all about them sending too much money and the victim sending back the excess before he finds out that the initial payment was bogus.

Yep, been reading about these scams for years now. Has anyone figured out how much money these types of scemes have actually scammed over the years?

It seems this person actually wanted the phone though - that's what the fake PayPal email was for.

Snopes says:

Quote:
According to a 1997 newspaper article:
"We have confirmed losses just in the United States of over $100 million in the last 15 months," said Special Agent James Caldwell, of the Secret Service financial crimes division. "And that's just the ones we know of. We figure a lot of people don't report them."

Ouch! That was almost a decade ago. How much is it now - couple of billions!?

I'm not sure you will get ANY action, if my past experience with eBay is anything to go by.

Ok I got essentially the same thing: I am SoAndSo from Brooklyn, but am currently in the Netherland for Church function. I saw your item blah blah blah and bought it for my grandson's birthday......Nigerian Address, bull$hit about payment etc....

Only thing is -- I got a warning email from eBay that this was a "suspicious bidder" because his (her?) address could not be verified.

I am so sick of this cr@p. Nigeria is obviously a society with a sick culture.

Okay, I'm really curious why you went to the trouble of signing up for an account on this board only to respond to something that is totally incidental to the board and then attached an mp3 of Mr. Ed to your post.

I'm not saying you can't do any of those things, but it's kind of odd. You would appear to be a spammer, other than you're not, well, spamming anything.

They may have attached the file simply as a way to host it so they could use it elsewhere... Just speculation of course, since it seems totally odd and a random thing to do. Hopefully we don't see a rash of new members trying to use the board as a file repository.

Except for that it's already online at www.gotwavs.com. The exact same version.

Maybe he's a die-hard empegger that has just lurked and lurked here for years, finally finding a reason to join in the fray.

Or maybe he wants to send us each too much money and wait for the refund.

I have removed the file from the post. I don't know if that removes it from the server's file repository or not.

Hm. I suppose I should have saved off the URL before performing the delete, so I could make sure. Darn.

Edit: Bitt had the URL. As far as I can tell, the file is gone and can't be retrieved from the BBS any more. Good.
