Looks like Valve finally got the Friends network thing on Steam working again. Anyone here still playing anything online on Steam?

I still play a fair bit of HL2 / Counterstrike and I may be on even more at odd hours of the morning once the new baby turns up - my username there is frog51.

I don't really play any MP stuff on steam.
I went through HL2: Episode One a few days ago and now am going back through it with the commentary on. Anyone else played through it yet?

Just look me up as tfabris (at) gmail.com. It lets you look it up by email address. My in-game name contains special characters that would be hard to type. :-) I play a lot of Counter-Strike: Source. Quote: I went through HL2: Episode One a few days ago and now am going back through it with the commentary on. Anyone else played through it yet?
Only the instant it became available through Steam.
I liked it. I'm also going through it a second time, more slowly, in commentary mode. Enjoying that a lot, too.
Although, there weren't any moments in HL2:Ep1 that took my breath away like some of the moments in HL2 did. HL2 contained several incredible set-pieces that were just mind-boggling and unforgettable. Ep1 has got some "good" moments, and some "fun" moments, and some "interesting" moments, and some "funny" moments, but nothing overwhelming or incredibly memorable.
I'm hoping that this was due to the scope of the gameplay in Ep1: The cramped feeling of having to escape from the Citadel and City 17. The sneak preview scenes of Ep2 make it look like much more of it will be set in the countryside outside of City 17, and this bodes well for the game in my opinion. The larger playfield should open up the possibility for more expansive and interesting scenes.
*edit - de-linked the e-mail address. Too many spam bots catch those on this board.

I think the problem is that you folks are lising your in-game names instead of your STEAM ID or your email address. It only goes by steam ID or email.

And where do I find out what this is? The login box has my email ( roger DASH steam AT differentpla DOT net ), and the Friends box says "Friends - guy-in-corner". How is this not my steam ID?
But, of course, my email address is now in this message, so that's cool, too.
(Only just downloaded EP1, so I've not had a chance to play it through yet -- still got wedding organisation to do, so I'm a little short of gaming-time).

The steam ID is the user name that you used to sign into the steam when you first set up steam. Since it gets saved on that computer, you may have long forgotten what you signed up for steam as. You can find it again by going to Steam Settings and selecting "login as different user".
In my case, the place where it says "Monkey Brains", (same place it says guy-in-corner on your screen), that's the name I use when I'm playing counter-strike, it's what I've entered in the NAME box within the Counter Strike game itself. My steam ID is tfabris, not Monkey Brains.
For clarification, there are multiple different identifying marks in Steam:
- Your email address that you signed up with (or updated later). - Your Steam ID that you signed up with. - Your in-game name (set in the options screen of that game, can be changed on the fly). - Your Friends name (set in the Friends user profile, possibly pulled from one of your in-game names by default, not sure. Can be changed on the fly.).

Ah, well, there you go. My Steam ID _is_ my email address -- I signed up for Steam way back in the mists of time, and it doesn't appear that it had the concept of separate ID and email address back then.

Absolutely - along with some of the mods like "The Hidden" which is great fun if a little flaky sometimes.
I'll keep an eye out for you.

Having a blast. My team took third at our big LAN party this weekend. I have never played the earlier TF variants so I don't miss grenades.

I've been enjoying TF2 since the beta. I'm glad they got rid of the grenades. That and bunny hopping turned TFC from 'fun' into 'spam-a-thon'. The pace of TF2 without those is still pretty hectic. I think a pyro running in to defend an enclosed capture point (gravel pit) is the definition of chaotic.

Yeah. I read the reasons why they removed them and it does help quite a bit with the game. It used to be that when you were nearly dead, you'd just spam all your grenade keys so hopefully you'd take somebody out afterwards. A couple of HWGuys spamming their MIRV grenades or an engineer throwing an EMP into a group of people would be messy.
