I personally can't wait to see this.
For some reason, I don't think there are gonna be too many Borat fans on the empeg board.

It's awkward to watch Borat for a 5-minute sketch on Da Ali G Show. I can't imagine watching twenty times as much.

Even though I'm a great Borat fan, I too don't think he can really pull it off at feature length. 10 minutes is all fine and dandy, but after an hour and a half I may want to eat my own face. As much as I like him now, if the movie goes badly it could ruin it forever for me.
Its risky. But then, I can't not see it!

What's funny though, is that I read in one of the articles that the movie did pretty well at some big film festival, maybe Cannes. I figured ANY real critic would have torn it apart.

Have you seen Ali G Indahouse? It was panned by the critics, but only really because the humour was puerile at best, but if you like puerile humour there were some great bits. The main "problem" (if it was a problem, is that the character moved from being a sketch show tool into a full-blown character, although I think they did it rather well. Gareth

And the free myspace screenings are Wednesday night. I'm still trying to decide between that, the Genitorturers, or the Dead Kennedys for that night's activity.

The IMDB rating is 8.4 too, which is pretty high for there. This site is giving free "tickets" for various dates, enter 44593 for the UK. However there are warnings about getting there early so they might be handing them out to anybody, so I'm not sure if I will bother to drive all the way to Southampton yet! Gareth

Having only caught bits and bites of Borat, I didn't think much of his humor and was going to pass on this film entirely. I've had the same impression of Ali G- again only catching seconds of anything in particular before absolutely losing interest... and certainly never associating one with the other. After viewing Sacha Cohen's interview on Jimmy Kimmel's show, though, I might have to take the blinders off.

Well, to be fair, there have only been 15 reviews, so far. I have my doubts that it will remain at 100%.
I'm with Robotic. I just don't find any humour in Borat, or Ali G. Don't get me wrong -- I understand where the humour is supposed to be, I just find that... well... it isn't. To me it just comes across as, stupid. Not funny stupid, like a good fart joke can be sometimes. It just comes across as lame, trying-too-hard stupid.
Different strokes, I guess. I hope the movie lives up to your expectations.

I hear you. I agree it's not for everyone. Still, sometimes I'm surprised by who likes what.
The girl I'm dating is an MD. I took her to see "Jackass 2" and totally expected her to want to leave the theater. She laughed so hard I thought she was gonna hurt herself.
I've been prepping her for Borat. Showing her all the clips I could find on YouTube. She loves all she's seen so far... To me, it's in the same vein as "The Office" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" - painful humor. The difference with Borat is - it's not with a bunch of actors. Just Borat.
That said, it's prolly gonna suck. :-)

Oh man, Children of Men is going to be fantastic. That's a great idea for a movie.
Pan's Labyrinth should be incredible too.
I find the Borat stuff to be pretty funny, but not this work of brilliance that most people seem to be making it out to be. And I certainly don't think it will be the best film of the year. Not literally, anyway. Maybe in the sense of "man, that was, like, the best movie of the year." And still, that type of movie for me is still Snakes on a Plane.

I've been trying an experiment over the last year or so with myself regarding movies, and it's working so well I'm trying to get all of my friends to do it.
It's simple... avoid all advertising and reviews. Period. Don't watch trailers. Don't talk to friends about movies. Just go see them. I've found my movie watching experiences have become WAY more enjoyable for the simple reason that I don't go in with any expectations whatsoever. I don't know who directed it, I don't know who's in it, I don't know what it's about, so it's all a surprise. It doesn't stop movies from sucking, but it eliminates the "that wasn't what I expected" and "that wasn't as good as I thought it would be" dissappointments.
Given, you simply can't do this across the board, stuff leaks through, but I've found seeing movies to be a way better experience with a blank slate. Also given, that if you were to truly blindly do this, you'd see a lot of shite films, but the little bit that gets through is enough to filter out stuff like the Shaggy Dog or Saw III. If my friends are going to see a movie, I'll tag along and not ask anything about it.
You can do it on a simple level, just don't read reviews and don't watch trailers. They ruin plot lines and build an image in your head that warps the experience.
Just throwing that out there.

Yeah loren, I've seen some of my favourite movies this way. My sister wanted to see Napoleon Dynamite, so I took her thinking it might have something to do with explosives.
When you have no expectations great films hit you from a completely new angle.

I'm almost with you there, Loren. I read a lot of movie reviews, but 95% of the time it's only after I've seen the movie.
For the most part I avoid trailers like the plague. They almost always reveal most/all of the plot points. One strange trend is that trailers are starting to try to deceive you as to what type of movie a film is.
There are exceptions to my trailer rule, though. For example, before Sin City came out, I'd never heard of the comic or knew what it was about. I probably would have avoided it. I happened to see the trailer in the theater. I think I watched that trailer 20 times (it's a work of art in it's self).
Anyway, to summarize, I'm with you there, Loren.

I love/hate seeing trailers in the theatre before movies. Usually, I dig the ones that are shown before indie/art house movies in small theatres, because otherwise there's no chance in hell I'd have heard of the movie otherwise. But I can't avoid them in the big theatres, because if you get there at the time the movie actually starts, good luck getting a non neck breaker seat. Maybe I'll start bring blinders... lol.
But yeah... I've found that the less I know about a movie, the chance I'll like it is exponentially higher because I can appreciate it or at least what it was trying to do rather than what I thought it was going to be or thought it should have done to fit the preconception I had.
EDIT: Oh, and if you guys haven't seen The Departed... do so. It's a perfect example of a movie that if I'd have seen the trailers or knew anything about who was in it, I'd probably have not gone. Glad I did.

The wife, myself and Mel went to see The History Boys last night, and we caught a trailer for Borat. The trailer was very, very funny, but I'm not convinced that they can keep it up for a feature-length movie, so we're not going to bother seeing that.
Definitely want to see The Departed, and maybe also Children of Men, but not so sure about that one.

That reminds me- there's some sort of student-film-editor competition every year where the challenge is to take clips from a movie and make a trailer with an entirely different emphasis than the original. Somewhere out there in the intertubes is a link to one I especially liked- The Shining... Ah- here it is!

It always cracks me up, that since he's been doing Ali G so long, no matter what character he's doing, his hands are ALWAYS making the "West Side" gesture... with the middle and ring finger crossed. I can't avoid noticing it now.

I got another free ticket from the Guardian for this tonight: http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/thebridge/

Meet me at The Bridge Theater on Geary anytime after 6, but before 7. I'm gonna go early because they give away more seats then they can fit in the theater.

PM sent.
Yeah, I remember reading this: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/01/19/MNGENASPH31.DTL
I think it's gonna be an interesting film. Although the subject matter is voyeuristic macabre. Perfect for pre-Halloween fun! :-)

All right, I gave it a chance, and saw it last night. SWMBO had obtained free tickets, which is good, because it wasn't really worth the $13/person it would have cost to see. It was better than I was expecting -- there were a few parts that did make me chuckle, but there certainly wasn't enough to make me guffaw loudly, let alone at nearly everything the way the bloke 6 rows back and to the right did. I got more laughs out of some of the trailers that showed before Borat. On the whole, it felt contrived, strained in parts, fell flat, and was in constant danger of losing my attention entirely. SWMBO fell asleep.

Fair enough. Not for everyone...
You guys see "Babel" yet? That was amazing, IMO.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061110/ap_on_en_mo/film_borat_lawsuitRidiculous. I'm sure they are embarrased by what they said but... What happened to responsibility? I hope it's thrown out of court. Someone backed into my motorcycle in front of a coffee shop in SF. With 5 witnesses standing around gawking at the guy, he claimed that he DIDN'T hit my bike! No one wants to take any responsibility for their actions or words! We're doomed. :-) - Jon

Loren,
See the imdb page for Borat. Under trivia, this tidbit is in there: "Over and Over again in the movie, Borat will shape his hand into a W shape, which is a sign for west-side, which is from another one of Cohens characters Ali g."

Anyone have any thoughts on the Borat movie scandals? Like where he paid the people in his "hometown" village $5 and lied to them about what they were appearing in? I have less sympathy for the fratboys who are upset that he used their embarrassing footage, since they knew what they were doing, but it's still hardly ethical.
I have less desire to see this than ever, and I didn't really start with a great desire to see it.

Do you think they should have been paid more than $5? I doubt the authenticity of the claim, but I don't see much wrong with getting paid $5 to do.... Nothing.

To appear as a featured player in a major motion picture? And be made fun of to millions of people without your knowledge?

Well... "featured player"? I dunno.
I can see why people would be upset about the way they were portrayed in the movie. To be honest though, let's look at some examples - the guy that strapped a dildo on his amputated arm - what did he think would come of that? The old woman who wore fake teets? The families that allowed farm animals in their homes? They don't sound too smart if they thought they weren't going to made fun of... What did they think? Also, the article that I read about the folks in Romania that were upset mentioned that many of the people there were happy to be included...
When they look at the income that the film has made, they want to get more. I don't really have much sympathy for them.
The producers of "Da Ali G Show" and the "Borat" movie had to deceive people in order to get their interviews. Pat Robertson, for example, wouldn't have agreed to do an interview with a guy that was going to further expose him for being an idiot.
The genius of Borat, I think, is that people think he's an idiot and they expose THEMSELVES as what they are - most of the people featured are truly bigots, racists, ignoramuses, anti-Semites, etc. etc. etc. If he tells everyone that he is about to punk them, they wouldn't participate.

Honestly, I disagree with you about the "genius" part, but I understand your point in general. As such, I have no truck with the people who knew exactly what he was saying and acted like ignorami anyway. And there is some truth to the notion that you can show these people for what they really are by pretending you have no idea what they're talking about or agree with them or whatever. But I don't think we really needed to be informed about fratboys. (Not that I'm defending them or their case; it's just neither insightful nor funny.) The Pat Robertson stuff? Sure.
But I do have a problem with misleading those people who have no idea what you're talking about. And those people weren't shown as themselves, they were paid to do things they wouldn't normally do, without being told how they were being represented.
And, to speak to a specific point, how was he supposed to know that a silicone fist was a sex toy? I'm sure the majority of people in the US wouldn't know, much less someone living in poverty in Romania.

Yeah, ok, I could be pursuaded to believe that the Romanian folks were really misled and deserve some compensation, or an apology, or something. What are they asking for? Cash? It sounds like they were aware that they were going to be in a movie, and most people are happy to be in one - people generally like their 15 mins of fame... Even in a poor village in Romania. It was probably more exciting than their normal lives would be... (I know that might sound rude, but I'd guess it's true). Ok, regarding the silicone fist... I for one would suspect that anything shaped like that and made from silicone would be sexual in nature... Maybe others wouldn't? Poor Romanians? Maybe they wouldn't... You have to admit, Borat has done a lot to expose that people in the US (and in the EU, when he was on the BBC) are the things I mentioned above. Example: The anti-Semitism that exists in the US, shocks me. Did I know it existed? Sure. But to see a bar full of people singing "throw the jew down the well" with Borat is still amazing - and funny too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hlwDSnkXrA- Jon

Yeah. I have no problem with that sort of stuff, really. I don't tend to find it particularly funny, though, at least not for more than about two minutes. The stuff where he shows people acting like idiots is fine. The stuff where he shows people being uncomfortable is not entertaining at all, unless I happen to dislike whoever he's making uncomfortable.
Basically, it mostly plays to me like crude Candid Camera, which was never funny, either.

Bitt.. It was funny. Very funny. Discussing it isn't necessarily funny, but watching it was. Sometimes crying funny. I still think it would be a better rental than a night at the movies, but it was someone else's request so we went with it.
Now if you pardon me, I have to go for a sexy time.

Bitt, I had the same reaction as you to the bits on the show, but I went to see the movie and found it hilarious. I still don't plan on watching any more Ali G stuff, except maybe if that Bruno movie comes out. I can only take his show in very short doses.
I'm not sure if he was making fun of those villagers. Besides, if he was trying to make Romanians look bad, why would he say he was from Kazakhstan?

Borat wins the case against the frat boys...
To be more accurate, the judge ruled against having a temporary restraining order that would force Borat to remove their scenes immediately:
Quote: Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Joseph Biderman ruled they had failed to show a reasonable probability of success on the merits of their case or that money damages alone would be insufficient to resolve their claims.
The lawsuit itself has not yet had its day in court.

Just read this little blurb about his Golden Globe nomination: Quote: Reprising his "Da Ali G Show" TV role as the clueless and crass Kazakh journalist Borat, Cohen was nominated for best musical or comedy actor.
"I have been trying to let Borat know this great news, but for the last four hours, both of Kazakhstan's telephones have been engaged," Cohen said in a statement. "Eventually, Premier (Nursultan) Nazarbayev answered and said he would pass on the message as soon as Borat returned from Iran, where (he) is guest of honor at the Holocaust Denial Conference."
