I personally can't wait to see this.
For some reason, I don't think there are gonna be too many Borat fans on the empeg board.

It's awkward to watch Borat for a 5-minute sketch on Da Ali G Show. I can't imagine watching twenty times as much.

Even though I'm a great Borat fan, I too don't think he can really pull it off at feature length. 10 minutes is all fine and dandy, but after an hour and a half I may want to eat my own face. As much as I like him now, if the movie goes badly it could ruin it forever for me.
Its risky. But then, I can't not see it!

What's funny though, is that I read in one of the articles that the movie did pretty well at some big film festival, maybe Cannes. I figured ANY real critic would have torn it apart.

Have you seen Ali G Indahouse? It was panned by the critics, but only really because the humour was puerile at best, but if you like puerile humour there were some great bits. The main "problem" (if it was a problem, is that the character moved from being a sketch show tool into a full-blown character, although I think they did it rather well. Gareth

And the free myspace screenings are Wednesday night. I'm still trying to decide between that, the Genitorturers, or the Dead Kennedys for that night's activity.

The IMDB rating is 8.4 too, which is pretty high for there. This site is giving free "tickets" for various dates, enter 44593 for the UK. However there are warnings about getting there early so they might be handing them out to anybody, so I'm not sure if I will bother to drive all the way to Southampton yet! Gareth

Having only caught bits and bites of Borat, I didn't think much of his humor and was going to pass on this film entirely. I've had the same impression of Ali G- again only catching seconds of anything in particular before absolutely losing interest... and certainly never associating one with the other. After viewing Sacha Cohen's interview on Jimmy Kimmel's show, though, I might have to take the blinders off.

Well, to be fair, there have only been 15 reviews, so far. I have my doubts that it will remain at 100%.
I'm with Robotic. I just don't find any humour in Borat, or Ali G. Don't get me wrong -- I understand where the humour is supposed to be, I just find that... well... it isn't. To me it just comes across as, stupid. Not funny stupid, like a good fart joke can be sometimes. It just comes across as lame, trying-too-hard stupid.
Different strokes, I guess. I hope the movie lives up to your expectations.

I hear you. I agree it's not for everyone. Still, sometimes I'm surprised by who likes what.
The girl I'm dating is an MD. I took her to see "Jackass 2" and totally expected her to want to leave the theater. She laughed so hard I thought she was gonna hurt herself.
I've been prepping her for Borat. Showing her all the clips I could find on YouTube. She loves all she's seen so far... To me, it's in the same vein as "The Office" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" - painful humor. The difference with Borat is - it's not with a bunch of actors. Just Borat.
That said, it's prolly gonna suck. :-)

I'm kinda tired of the Borat stuff, too. As such, here's my vote for potential best movie of 2006: The Fountain

Oh man, Children of Men is going to be fantastic. That's a great idea for a movie.
Pan's Labyrinth should be incredible too.
I find the Borat stuff to be pretty funny, but not this work of brilliance that most people seem to be making it out to be. And I certainly don't think it will be the best film of the year. Not literally, anyway. Maybe in the sense of "man, that was, like, the best movie of the year." And still, that type of movie for me is still Snakes on a Plane.

I've been trying an experiment over the last year or so with myself regarding movies, and it's working so well I'm trying to get all of my friends to do it.
It's simple... avoid all advertising and reviews. Period. Don't watch trailers. Don't talk to friends about movies. Just go see them. I've found my movie watching experiences have become WAY more enjoyable for the simple reason that I don't go in with any expectations whatsoever. I don't know who directed it, I don't know who's in it, I don't know what it's about, so it's all a surprise. It doesn't stop movies from sucking, but it eliminates the "that wasn't what I expected" and "that wasn't as good as I thought it would be" dissappointments.
Given, you simply can't do this across the board, stuff leaks through, but I've found seeing movies to be a way better experience with a blank slate. Also given, that if you were to truly blindly do this, you'd see a lot of shite films, but the little bit that gets through is enough to filter out stuff like the Shaggy Dog or Saw III. If my friends are going to see a movie, I'll tag along and not ask anything about it.
You can do it on a simple level, just don't read reviews and don't watch trailers. They ruin plot lines and build an image in your head that warps the experience.
Just throwing that out there.

Yeah loren, I've seen some of my favourite movies this way. My sister wanted to see Napoleon Dynamite, so I took her thinking it might have something to do with explosives.
When you have no expectations great films hit you from a completely new angle.

I'm almost with you there, Loren. I read a lot of movie reviews, but 95% of the time it's only after I've seen the movie.
For the most part I avoid trailers like the plague. They almost always reveal most/all of the plot points. One strange trend is that trailers are starting to try to deceive you as to what type of movie a film is.
There are exceptions to my trailer rule, though. For example, before Sin City came out, I'd never heard of the comic or knew what it was about. I probably would have avoided it. I happened to see the trailer in the theater. I think I watched that trailer 20 times (it's a work of art in it's self).
Anyway, to summarize, I'm with you there, Loren.

I love/hate seeing trailers in the theatre before movies. Usually, I dig the ones that are shown before indie/art house movies in small theatres, because otherwise there's no chance in hell I'd have heard of the movie otherwise. But I can't avoid them in the big theatres, because if you get there at the time the movie actually starts, good luck getting a non neck breaker seat. Maybe I'll start bring blinders... lol.
But yeah... I've found that the less I know about a movie, the chance I'll like it is exponentially higher because I can appreciate it or at least what it was trying to do rather than what I thought it was going to be or thought it should have done to fit the preconception I had.
EDIT: Oh, and if you guys haven't seen The Departed... do so. It's a perfect example of a movie that if I'd have seen the trailers or knew anything about who was in it, I'd probably have not gone. Glad I did.

The wife, myself and Mel went to see The History Boys last night, and we caught a trailer for Borat. The trailer was very, very funny, but I'm not convinced that they can keep it up for a feature-length movie, so we're not going to bother seeing that.
Definitely want to see The Departed, and maybe also Children of Men, but not so sure about that one.
