My dad's looking for a 19'' LCD monitor for his PC. He was going to get the Dell 1907FP but I read some reviews and people have been far from impressed.

So I wondered what monitors you'd all recommend around the £220 mark. I know its not a fortune but there should be some good models out there. I'm looking to buy one too for my gaming PC.

Cheers,

Phil

What kinds of things have you been reading? I've had nothing but good experiences with Dell's monitors. They're frequently at the top of the pack in performance, and always at a great value.

I used to not think there was a huge difference in LCD monitors, but now my company is apparently going with Viewsonic for all our flat panels. They're terrible. Even for 2D office desktop work, I think they look awful. The Dells are gorgeous in comparison.

Well this page isn't too compilmentary and seems to indicate that its worse than the previous models.

I have an HP one at work and its terrible - hurts my eyes something dreadful. I suppose it doesn't help that the admins have it setup so that all the fonts are fuzzy

Yeah, my previous workplace forced all desktops to use one resolution, which were not native to any of the monitors they were buying. Everyone cheered when they got their new, shiny, flat monitor, and then I'd get a call later because their text was all blurry.

Sounds like a good review to me. I hardly ever take the word of random people on the internet. Not that all professional reviewers do a good job, but they have a better track record than the random people who have buyer's remorse.

My thinking is that random people will say what they think without Dell getting upset. I'm a random person after all

Does anyone here have that model?

Edit: or have say, a Samsung in the same price range?

I have a samsung and three dells. The samsung is better than the dells, but I'm hyper-picky. Probably most folks wouldn't see a difference.

I bought a cheap Dell 17" a month or two ago, the 1707FP. It is definitely crisp, but it sucks for color work. The problem is that its screen is no of uniform brightness from top to bottom. In fact there's an obvious gradient. So if you put two identical images one above the other, the one at the bottom will always look brighter (regardless of viewing angle, height adjustments, etc..)

I chalked it up to getting what I paid for - and I can't be bothered to return it. When I get a larger display, likely a 24" widescreen, there's no way I'll settle for this type of issue (or any issues including dead pixels for that matter).

Strange. Perhaps I don't have as much of a discerning eye, but I didn't see any problems like that on the Dells I've used.

I heartily recommend the 30" Dell, by the way. I love it

I've not seen any problems with the Dell 2005FPW monitors that I use (two at home, two at work) -- I'm not doing any colour work, but there's nothing obvious under normal operation.

Maybe it's the smaller ones that are suffering from this problem? Given that these are sold with pretty much any Dell you buy these days, I can imagine that quality control might be a bit slack in order to meet demand.

I run my 21" CRT monitor at 1600x1200 and even run my laptop that way. I've skimmed over specs for a lof of LCD monitors and they seem to not support such a high res.. Am I reading the specs wrong? If my notebook's 17" LCD screen can do 1600x1200 why can't a more expensive LCD monitor do it?

The only thing I don't like about widescreens is that they'd push all the stuff on my desk over the edge and onto the floor!

20in LCDs tend to do 1600x1200. I'm in the same boat as you, except that I run at 1920x1440 and really only the giant 30in LCDs can match that.

It depends what you use the monitor for; for any given diagonal (say, 20in) a widescreen gives you less area than 4:3. Widescreens are mainly useful for games or video, where you're inherently dealing with landscape imagery, but then that is a big part of the market. For software development more lines of code is better than longer lines of code, so if I had to have a widescreen I'd probably use it portrait.

I also don't understand why comparable resolutions are so hard to find. My 17" laptop does an awesome 1920x1200. There are very few LCD monitors that do that resolution and they each cost large dollar amounts. I'm not asking for free but I'd expect the prices to have dropped more than they have.

Look into the Dell 2001fpw for a 20 inch LCD that does 1600x1200. I have two of them on my desk at work and they are really handy. Though DVI does become a requirement at this resolution, notible differences appeared between VGA and DVI with these monitors right next to each other.

That's odd. Like Peter said, I've generally seen 20" LCDs promising that resolution.

All I can say is that I'm loving my 2560x1600.

I've had really good luck with the Envision 7220, which is a 1200x1024 17" for around $200. No personal experience with their 19", though. And not sure if it's fast enough for gaming.

I have the Dell 2405 (1920x1200) and I'm very pleased with it. I've been a flatscreen Trinitron tube man for years. This latest generation of LCD monitors are finally as good or better than a top-notch tube, though not as bright. As others have said, for precise color work or for maximum brightness, you need to get a tube. The LCDs don't have totally "black" black, etc. For everyday stuff they are just great. The LCD is much less fatiging than the tubes because there isn't any flicker.

Based on my experience, I'd recommend the Dell LCDs without any reservation. They also have a new 30" that supposedly uses the same LCD as the Apple one, but around $1000 less money. You need a fancy new video card to drive the 30" though.

FWIW,
Jim

Actualy, as of monday, the ACD is 200 less than the Dell, 400 less if you qualify for an academic discount. I'm still reccomending the dell to customers, as it can be ordered with complete care, which beats any waranty you can get from Apple.

The 30" LCDs are beautiful, no matter who makes them. The resolution and size is just astounding. I'm close to being able to justify one for myself as a bussiness expense, and boy am I hoping that works out.
