Ok put my Empeg Mk2 into the dash this morning and it stopped at the Empeg logo. Tried rebooting a few times but had no luck so travelled to work with no tunes! :(( Anyway had a look at the terminal output, Empeg goes through the motions then halts saying "Kernel panic - cannot mount fs 0". The unit was playing fine last night and has not has a sync or been dropped etc since. Any ideas I'm hoping IDE CABLE? Rio are going to collect it tommorrow but I'd rather have a quick fix has anybody ever seen this before? Many thanks!

What was the last thing you did last night? A synch?

What version are you running?

Hi, no didn't do anything the unit was removed from the car, left in the house overnight, then put back in the car this morning, which is why I'm surprised it has completely died. I'm running the lastest developer version, and displayserver, which has been running fine for about 2 months.

Many thanks for your help!

Could you post a boot log? Connect the serial port up, let us know what happens when you power up. An IDE cable failure is pretty easy to spot...

Nothing unusual I can see in the boot log you posted, up to the point where it mounts the root FS.

May sound silly, but if you (gently) shake the unit up and down, can you hear anything loose?

Greetings!

The log looks incomplete. Can you list it all the way to the kernel panic, or is that as far as it ever gets (unusual). From the look of it, it doesn't seem to be finding any hard drives - it could very well be an IDE cable...

Unfortunately the shake won't work. The drives themselves have a disclaimer that they will make noise when shaken.

Kind of, I can see the IDE cable moving back and forth, whether this is more than before or not I cannot say. How are Empeg (or Rio) for repairing items with the warranty sticker removed? Mine is almost gone anyway to be honest!

I must admit I noticed this, a few times it did continue a little and displayed the message I put in my first post. Couldn't get it to do it again, it is only that one line though and then the unit freezes and fails to respond in any way.

after reading the log, and all the comments, your log looks incomplete, and it sounds like what happened to mine.. the drive cable may be loose, contact empeg support, they will be able to help you.

As long as the sticker has just worn away from normal use, you're fine. If it was removed by you when opening the case... then i'm guessing you're gonna have to pay for the repairs.

It's not finding any hard disks. My read is a loose IDE cable. Pop the top and check it. If the one at the drive isn't loose, remove the crade so you can check both ends.

You could also do a RAM test (ctrl-T in hyperterminal immediately after you apply power), but that's probably not it.

Several months ago we started gluing the IDE connectors in place and using an adhesive pad to restrict the movement of the cable. There have been few problems since then, and those that have occured are almost always on unglued cables (either an early unit or a unit upgraded by the user).

The fix takes about 30 seconds (reconnect the cable!) - usually we will ask the client to open the player and check the cable, to avoid the inconvenience of shipping it back for repair.

You DID glue/tape the cable before you closed the case, right?
