Jazzy Engineering came up with a an aux-in board for the '05-'06 Legacy/Outbacks. There's a deep/sticky post over at LegacyGT.com (link).

I'm ordering mine tonight and will let you all know how it goes!

I put my Jazzy aux-in in last week and it works well with my Garmin 2820 and Ipod routed into it via a Cleansweep CL-SES. I'm looking at putting the Empeg in the glvoe box to keep the cubby near stock. Volumes are a little low compared with the radio or normal CD operations but sounds good, at least to my untrained ear.

BTW, watch the screws on the side that connect the ground wire and the brackets when disassembling. I wound up stripping one as did another person recently.

Good deal, thanks for the tip. Now that I've lived with my FM input for a while, I can definitely notice the difference between it and CD - it's just kind of flat & a bit quiet. I can't wait for it.

Another user on those forums, mvigneau (who appears to be the same mvigneau that is a member here) is working on a slightly nicer but more complicated solution. Details here.

Glad to see some other options that dont require hacking up the dash.

So funny, I pass his hometown every day on the way to work...

I want to see his install before I commit - it sure looks interesting.

I installed one of Jazzy's kits in my buddies new '06 outback a month ago. Simple install and it works great, he loved it... until the car was stolen a week and a half ago. bummer.

no joke eh? BUT... here's the rub. See... we were paragliding... which usually involves a few people parking at the LZ, and one car driving up. Sometimes we'll leave keys hidden on the car so that if we need to go retrieve people or go back up and get the other persons car, the first person down can do it. That day, my car was parked right next to his, and both of our keys were hidden. Our guess is someone saw us hide the keys and had easy pickin's. And thus the rub... for once... MY car didn't get stolen! And it had lots of goodies in it that day too.

Ah, kayakers have the same issue. A car up at put-in, one at take out, and keys are supposed to stay on the vehicle. I'm a bit paranoid about hiding my key on the car every time I leave it, because you never know who's watching. I end up just taking my keys with me. That's great, until I get in a situation where I'm stuck in the river somewhere, and the other person needs my keys to the car. I need to get a permanent key hidden somewhere, so that everyone I paddle with knows where it is, but it'll only get put in that location when I'm in my garage, or something. That way, it's there for emergency, but I'm using my regular key most of the time. Bummer about the stolen car, of course.

I guess those keypads Ford puts on all of their cars aren't that stupid after all.

If it's something you do regularly, why not just get some duplicate keys and hand them out?

No, they're not stupid, at all. I wish I had one, in fact. My regular kayak partner used to have a Ford with one of those keypads, and it was great. He's since switched to a Toyota, which doesn't have the keypad, and I'm much more nervous, now. Fortunately, I've never heard of any problems with people breaking into cars in the area we typically boat.

I'd rather deal with the logistics of one or two keys, rather than many keys. I do need to get a couple spare keys made, anyway, though, so thanks for the reminder.

So the downside of dealing with "many" keys is worse than the downside of having your car stolen?

Okay, to each his own.

Well, not exactly. For example, I can leave it in a non-standard location that's a bit more of a pain to get to, than, say, on top of the driver side tire (which I've seen people do), yet is still accessible for an emergency. Basically at that point, it's just the spare key you leave on your car somewhere, in case you lose your key.

Which still doesn't solve the problem of key exchange with buddies while out and about. I think an extra key, distributed at the start of the day (and collected back at the end of the day) could be a good way to go. And less friendly to car thieves.

Cheers

Am I inferring correctly that you always have a spare key on your car?

Simply rewire the car with RFID locks and get people this.

Or implant the RFID chip in the hands of all your friends. And when they're no longer your friends, well, that's one less hand they'll have.

No... but that's my intent. I haven't done it so far, because I haven't been able to sufficiently convince myself of the wisdom of it.
