Ok ok ok … since all of you are so much more intelligent than me I have a question to boil your brains with!

This really has no purpose other than it would be nice to be able to say that I did it, walk around like a stud at one of my parties (even though I didn’t fiqure out how to do it).

Can anyone think of a way to connect your empeg to a winamp shoutcast server and broadcast it over your home stereo?

Sounds dumb I know.. But I think it would be nice considering there are some nice shoutcast servers out there! And even though I could just play it over my home stereo direct from the computer.. that is just boring, and no challenge!

I'm pretty sure you can do this with Frank Van Gestel's Displayserver applet. It's linked at the Geek site.

You could also hook it the home stereo directly or to a Rio Receiver (in the near future).

connect your empeg to a winamp shoutcast server

If you are talking about PULLING the music from the shoutcast server, directly to the EMPEG and then to the stereo, no.... I don't think that you can, and I really don't think that DisplayServer is going to do it, unless there is some functionality built in that I didn't see in the source....

At the least, you would have to have an applet running on the empeg that connected to the shoutcast server, and wrote the music information to a FID that the Empeg is playing. Now, I don't know enough about the Player software, but it is possible... MAYBE, for it to be a named pipe type file, and the EMPEG to pull directly from the pipe. I'm thinking that the caching would play hell here. In the end, it would probably be easier to write a custom mp3 decoder that listened to the stream, and outputed to /dev/audio (I haven't even looked to see if that exists on the Empeg... Bad geek owner.)

So... If you are talking about serving MP3's to a shoutcast server, yeah, that's pretty doable. If you are talking about pulling FROM the server.... Not in it's current incarnation... AFAIK.

Have anybody thought of discarding the player application and
running a "normal" shoutcast-client?
I guess the /dev/dsp could be used with any sound app?
