My PC mouse has started generating fake button ups, so if I'm dragging something it'll drop in the wrong place. This really screws up Photoshop and email organisation in Outlook. I replaced the mouse and the new one does the same thing. Has anyone come across this annoying behaviour before?

Just a shot in the dark here, but accessibility features sometimes result in strange behaviours like that.

Maybe poor optical qualities of the surface you're moving the mouse on?
Wood grain makes my mouse skip and start, but not drop things.

The problem is clearly that it's a -1 mouse of inconvenience and you can't drop it until you get the curse dispelled.

I'm so lucky that peanut butter doesn't spray out of the mouth the way coke does.

I had a very similar problem on a Logitech mouse when I wore the left click button clean out. I had just used it so much that the contacts had worn down I guess. A new mouse fixed the problem. I'm guessing this is not your problem since a second mouse isn't working though. If both mice are well worn, it could be an issue though.

I second the mousing surface notion. Optical mice hate surfaces with depressions or other imperfections. I've had 100% error rate with optical mice on those semi-hard plastic mouse pads because of this. Try a new mouse pad or a retro ball mouse.

Hmm, well it is on one of those semi hard mouse mats.. I'll try using it on the desk surface for a while.

I noticed today it also sends button down clicks of its own accord on occassions. It feels like software to me.
