what to do with old 4x250GB Seagate disks?

I'm upgrading my Infrant fileserver at home from an old X6 box with 4x250GB disks to a new NV+ box with 4x750GB disks. The X6, by itself, is pretty much worthless when you can get a new diskless NV+ for $600 or so (and with much, much lower noise), but the disks (Seagate ST3250823AS 250GB SATA drives) still have some value. The question is what I should do with them. Cheap USB/Firewire enclosures? eBay?

I vote for external enclosures and use them for your most important data that you want to back up. You'll be able to store them in a few different locations. It was you who posted about losing data, wasn't it? I'm considering doing this with a couple drives that size. I'll take my Quicken data, Web page files, and photos, and put them on two disks. Then I'll alternate which one is at work and which is at home. If I'm really paranoid I might do that with three drives, so that all the backups are never in one place at one time.
Or you could just give them to me. There's always that...

Why not just keep them in the old unit?
Otherwise, it's always handy to have a portable hard drive floating around.

The old NAS box is probably worth keeping around, and it's certainly possible to back-up to it over the network. The appeal of USB enclosures is that I can split the data up, carry them around, and so forth. I'm also not entirely sure how long this thing will last. They really screwed up the engineering on the case cooling (and have since radically changed how the newer boxes are cooled).

Put them back in the X6, deploy it at a friend's house, and do off-site backups using duplicity (or similar)? Peter

The X6 still seems to have some value. Throw it up on craiglist and see what it goes for, or let me know when to check your trash can. As to the drives, I travel with 2 250GB USB drives, and copy all photos to both of them before erasing cards. I check one and carry on the other. Matthew

We're starting to pack to move house, and I'm sure we'll find a whole heap of stuff that we don't want, that's too much effort to sell, but also too potentially useful to someone to be simply thrown away. I guess the bulk of it is going to end up at the tip, though.
I'm glad I took those three boxes of computer-stuff to the empeg meet. Most of it found good homes.

I have a ton of stuff like that, and I'm going to have to get rid of some stuff because I'm moving into a smaller place with someone in July. My solution? Yard sale! I have a ton of stuff that I don't want to throw out, but I bet would be worth $5 to someone, and having them all come to me is much easier than arranging individual sales.

For stuff that you just want to give away to someone who could use it, Freecycle is a good network of people trading stuff (junk) on the net.
