Elaine's birthday is coming up. Last year I got her an ipod shuffle (wanted something as simple and light as possible) for her to be able to listen to podcasts while biking to work (45 minutes one way).

The problem with the shuffle is that rewind doesn't work properly - a real problem if you missed 1 minute towards the end of a 25-minute podcast because of traffc noise, construction or whatsoever.

So, is the nano better in this regard?

The nano is basically a standard iPod but just smaller. Rewind works fine for me.
