The clone tool copies the entire contents of a Mark1 to a new Mark2 via USB. It is hard-coded to only go Mark1->Mark2, if I recall correctly. I'm pretty sure it was only intended to be used by owners of Mark1s that upgraded to Mark2s.

Can it do a Mark 2 -> Mark 2? If so, can the data stream be redirected to make a proprietary backup?

Like I said, I believe it's hard coded for Mark1->Mark2 only.

I'm sure that if the Empeg folks ever wrote a proprietary backup utility, it would use a similar protocol, but there isn't a backup utility at this time.

At present, it cannot. It was a purpose-built tool with limited properties. But you bring up a good point -- it looks like the groundwork for a backup utility within emplode might already be there.

To reiterate my number one empeg wishlist desire: A simple, crude, brute-force backup utility built into emplode that will mirror my entire empeg (including database) to my PC's hard drive. The backup file can be a single, big, compressed, encoded, encrypted file that cannot be viewed, edited, played, or used for anything in the whole world, except to be mirrored back to the same empeg (serial number check?) that wrote it. I think that under these circumstances empeg's concerns about enabling piracy might be alleviated.

If the tool were not part of emplode, then a stand-alone utility that would run in Windows would suffice. I would be very willing to pay for such a utility.

I've spent an evening fooling around on windows and came up with a nice windows backup-utility.
It requires displayserver running on the empeg.
It takes the CSV-dump from emplode as input and will save all MP3's in one directory. Files are stored as on the empeg.
This way you can select which files to backup by editing the CSV file.
Anyway, download it from http://empeg.dyndns.org/empeg/displayserver1.1/empbackup.zip and give it a try.
Note: No checks are made if the CSV file is valid or the destination directory exists, so make sure everything is filled in correctly

I've just created a new version; the new one also saves the meta-data (*1 files) and shows the transfer-speeds.

Yup, you got that right - that's why Philips pays him so much.

Go on, I can do that - Gizza Job!

P.S. Why don't you come over to the Amersfoort bash, have a good time, and meet him yourself? A seriously nice bloke. Hi Frank!
