I have been going through harddrives at the rate of 1 every 6 months or so. Symptomatically, the player would lock during playback, emit a periodic, low-volume squeal - as of the drive spinup cycling and triggering and sometimes give the "No Hard Drive" error. Replacing the drive (and reflashing obviously) has always seemed to fix the problem in the past (as well as give me an excuse to increase capacity). This time, however, things are different.

Now, the player never finishes booting. The screen gets to the tuner initialization (I don't have one) and then prints "Segfault error" and then "Segkill error" on the screen and reboots, in an endless loop). I am currently running 2.01 developer, and a console output from the error is below.

It looks to me like this may be a memory error. Anyone else have some familiarity with this? This is a MkII player (rio branded). I have had one of these since 2000 (my first was empeg branded), and there is still nothing on the market which touches it. I do not want to loose it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
-S.

Looks like a possible "bad track".

Load the developer software (if you haven't already done so), and then connect via serial and hit "control-C" to kill off the player. Then do:

player -i

Usually that gets ya out of the crash loop. You might want to bring up the Hijack menu first, though, and copy down the FID it reports -- later on, you can examine that FID (track) and see if it really is corrupt or not.

Cheers

Not that "player -i" doesn't work -- it does, and it may be the preferable way to deal with this -- but sometimes you can't readily get to a serial console, in which case, when the player powers up, pound on the skip button like a wild monkey. In many cases, you can skip the track before the player gets to the segment that makes it crash. You might have to try a few times before it works.
