sorry this is somewhat unrelated

I am installing a new head unit in my 2001 vw golf to connect the EMPEG player I just bought to.

On the new head unit the radio does not come in it work the same with or without the antenna connected.

I am using an antenna adaptor that just converts the vw plug to the usa style one it has no electronics.

Does anyone know if this is the right adaptor ? I read on another website about an adaptor that you have to connect the power antenna wire to. The vw dealer had never heard on one like that.

IIRC (I have a Polo '01 and I think it uses the same antenna) the
antenna is a powered one which needs (well, I use a JVC head for tapes
and radio, and it seems to get the stations around here well enough
without it) a special adapter that feeds power to the antenna.

Not that I listen very much to the radio... (think it was three
months ago, last time :-)

Also, beware of VW's habit of swithing pin 4 & 7 in the ISO connector
(constant and keyed +12V)

You do need an antenna power adaptor, this feeds power to the amp in the base of the antenna mast - I need the same in my 2000 new beetle. Should be about $10.

I need to stop asking the people working in the store questions and just tell them what I need

now I just need the empeg to get here

does anyone know how to remove the center part where the head unit is (it looks like it comes out in a unit to me) it would be much easier to get everything in there with it out

I was having the same problem with my car, figuring out how to take everything off. However, Crutchfield has a GREAT master sheet that you can probably buy for your car. I couldn't find them on their site, so I called em and asked. It was 4.95 w S&H and it got to my house two days later.

That should help you a lot. And it really helps in not breaking something on your car :P

Let me add my usual two cents to this (since I say the same thing every time it comes up):

Those Crutchfield master sheets are works of ART. They will keep you from scratching, breaking, or damaging your car interior, because they show you exactly how to dismantle your dash and speaker locations. In the case of my Honda, it even showed me how to use a piece of cloth in a certain spot to prevent damage to the plastic as I was prying off the clock assembly.

If you are doing installation work, do not touch a single clip or screw until you have ordered these master sheets and have read them carefully.

I callled crutchfield they said the guide they have for the VW Golf basically only tells how to remove the stock radio and not how to disassemble the dash

Yes, the Bentley VW manual would help you disassemble the dash... however, this is not trivial and shouldn't be necessary.

I'm not sure how different the Golf console is, but I managed to install two HUs into my 2K Passat with minimal frustration. I installed my first HU into the top DIN slot, and a week later added the Empeg into the middle slot.

Things do get awful tight in the VW cage, but if you take your time and take full advantage of the few holes behind the HU area to stuff away as much wiring as possible, you should be able to finesse it all into place. Good luck...

shoudn't there be a yellow wire ?

also does anyone have a wiring diagarm for the MK1 anymore I downloaded the manual from the empeg site but it looks like it's for the MK2 (is the wiring the same ?)

every other head unit I have installed has
constant power

ignition
ground
dimmer
remote turn on / power antenna

this only appears to have ignition, dimmer, and ground
(red, orange, and black wires)

The orange wire is the remote on for the amp and power antenna. The MK1 doesn't have a headlight sense (dimmer) input
