Dviant new poster Registered: 14/01/2005 Posts: 38	So apparently I have the rare Visual auto change bug (Visuals change with track despite settings). I don't exactly know when I picked up this bug as I haven't really done anything but sync the device in several years. I just never noticed till I recently changed vehicles and its new install location is much more visible. Currently running 2.01 dev. No Hijack currently but upgraded to v508 before I reflashed to try to get rid of it. I don't think have I ever installed anything beta (been a while, but I'm not the type - I like things to just work), I didn't even start to run Hijack till late in the game. There isn't too much posted on the forum, found a couple threads but they aren't too helpful. Its a rare bug. Lucky me. Any thoughts of what to do about it? I know just re-flashing doesn't work. Thanks

These seem to describe the problem I was having. I don't think I ever installed a beta though, Ive been running 2.01 for years (and I have likely had the bug just as long).

Install this special hijack kernel, boot once or twice with it, verify that the visuals now behave (without rebooting), and then re-install a regular (hijack) kernel over top of it again (regardless). Upon start up into win2k I heard the familiar sound of a hard disk trying to die "Spin up, click, spin, click, spin". Luckily it was only the storage drive. The old IBM 75GXP finally bit the dust. Slightly different procedure required: 1. flash the new kernel. 2. boot with it. 3. suspend the player (push top button until it goes to sleep). 4. wake it up again after a few seconds. 5. wait until the disk stops spinning. 6. power it off. 7. flash a normal kernel again. Upon booting with the second flash immediately upon reboot a message saying "Settings Lost" appeared. But it proceeded to boot up and act like it should. Awesome! Thank you very much!

And of course I completely forgot to get a savearea dump before we fixed it -- could have been useful in having Hijack automatically detect/fix this kind of thing in the future. Silly me. Actually, the old (bad) settings are probably still in flash (it takes 32 suspend/poweroff cycles on average before they get wiped). But it's not really worth the fuss. The visual autorepeat settings are saved as a bunch of 2-bit bitfields in the flash, and I suspect accidental sign-extension is happening to one of them when the field next door isn't all zeros. Or something like that. Cheers

I was going to apply Mark's kernel, but before I did wondered if anyone still cared to get an image of my flash area. (I doubt it, since development seems to have been stopp?
