My Gmail is broken and doesn't seem to be leaving me any options to fix it.

It was working fine until SWMBO wanted me to send an email using her Gmail account (the attachment she wanted to send was on my machine, but she wanted the mail to originate from her).

When I attempted to log out of my account Gmail stopped working. At the bottom of the screen (in the taskbar) it says "Redirecting - Mozilla Firefox". At the bottom of the Gmail window (or what would be the Gmail window if it would open) on the left it says "Waiting for Mail.Google.com" and the blue progress bar on the right loops over and over, going about 2/3 of the way across and then starting over. To the right of the progress bar it says "www.google.com" with a closed padlock icon.

I have done a power-off reboot, but that hasn't solved the problem.

That's as far as I can get. It probably isn't a Gmail problem but a Firefox problem. Hmmm... the fact that I can log into my Gmail account using Internet Explorer but not Firefox tends to support this supposition, doesn't it?

So, how do I fix Firefox so that it will see my Gmail account? Firefox seems to be working just fine for everything else.

Update: After opening Gmail with Internet Explorer and then exiting, Gmail is once again working with Firefox. Once again the bbs has come through with the solution, even if it was myself that provided it. smile What do you suppose was causing the problem?

What extensions do you have installed? Have you updated Firefox to the latest version (Help > Check for updates)? Have you tried clearing out all your browser data (Tools > Clear recent history > Everything)? Try downloading CCleaner and make sure the options for Firefox are checked.

The problem as you've described is certainly a problem with your Firefox installation or your computer.

*edit*
That third suggestion, to clear your browser data, might remove stuff you want, so check off what you want it to remove.

Probably cookies. IIRC, there are some Firefox extensions to help with switching between Gmail accounts.

Could it be that this issue and your previous issue with gmail are linked?

Yes, it's a cookie issue and it's the same one as the previous post. Deleting cookies will fix it. Happens to me constantly because my wife and I check 4 different gmail accounts regularly from the same machine.

They really oughtta fix it though.

I check two accounts regularly from the same computer at home. I use to have the redirection problem fairly often, but it hasn't happened to me in quite a while. I'd guess it has been over three months since I've had it happen. I'm not sure what changed.

Google probably assumes that you'll check GMail using two different user accounts in Windows, thereby having two different sets of cookies. I'm certainly not saying it's right, though. If I only had one computer in the household, my wife and I would probably use the same login. I hate dealing with multiple user accounts.

But if it were just me checking multiple GMail accounts? Well...I simply wouldn't! I'd just combine the two and only have to check one account. GMail is so good at drawing in many different accounts, and I have at least 10 going into mine at the moment. I use it for work and personal, and just filter with labels. It's great.

Only option #5 is any good for multiple people though. Considering the absurdity of option #2 (for multiple users), I'm surprised they didn't suggest accessing your mail with a local POP or IMAP client instead of a web browser. Then you could avoid the shite Google UI. wink

Yeah, I'm not hot on those suggestions. Well, basically #2 was what I was suggesting for a single user accessing multiple accounts, although I don't access multiple GMail accounts that way. I simply have my GMail account, and I have about 10 email addresses from my various domains all going to my GMail account, and GMail makes it really easy to reply to messages and make it appear to come from the address it was sent to.

And yeah, the Google UI isn't the greatest, but I like it just fine. Frankly, I like it better than Thunderbird or Outlook.

Gee, I'm sorry that they listed more options than the one that you found to be the best.

Yeah, you should really write them a comment about that. And feel free to use my suggestion of using a mail client if you want to also ask them to update their article.

An easy way with Chrome is to open an "incognito window" (ctrl+shift+n). Incognito windows keep their own isolated set of cookies.

Oh, Bitt -- would you?

I checked, Aeromexico has daily flights from Raleigh to Guadalajara, let me know when you're arriving and I'll pick you up at the airport.

Okay, here's a related (?) problem. Firefox on my Mac laptop, visiting nytimes.com, is laying itself out incorrectly. The main panel with all the articles is appearing below the vertical strip on the left side which lists all the newspaper sections.

Theory 1: it's got something to do with my AdBlock Plus configuration. Disabled that. Reloaded. Ads appeared, layout still busted.

Theory 2: some bogus cookies. Cleared anything related to nytimes.com. No effect.

Theory 3: something bad in the cache. Deleted it. Took longer to reload. Same problem.

Any ideas?

Most of my layout problems like that get fixed when I enable the scripting for that site (assuming I trust that site enough to, of course). I suppose that is only relevant if you are running NoScript.

I'm not running NoScript, and I've tried window widening. No effect. Any other ideas?
