I was reading someone's blog and they mentioned this series which was shown on Channel 4 back in the 80's/early 90's about the technology you find in the home. I can just about remember it when it was first on (I was 9 when the first series started).

The rather unique thing about the show was that they spent much of the programme making home made versions of the items they were looking at. For example, in the series on office devices they demonstrated how the first fax machine worked by using two nails, a battery and piece of wood! There was another where they recorded audio onto sellotape covered in rust.

There's a large collection of them on YouTube, in particular this person's channel:

I thought some people on here may find this interesting. My favorites are the Television, the VCR and Photocopier.

I specifically remember the one with the fax machine. And one about vacuum cleaners (er, hoovers?). It was a great series.

Yup. SLOM is a great series. Low budget looking and was but really good. You can download them all with the permission of the presenter. There is more stuff at SLOM page, Rudiments of Wisdom, Hunkin's Experiments and his actual home page as well which are all interesting.

I really like that show. Thanks to tman for the earlier post (I had to search for 'brubek' in order to find it. HA!)

The drive I had those stored on is long dead, so now I'll have to grab another set.
I think I'll alert some friends to do the same.

I had no idea Trevor had already posted about this. I suppose the BBS has been around so long now that even seemingly obscure things have been referenced more than once.

Yes that was a great show. I downloaded them all in xvid format from a link Tim Hunkin had on his website years ago. Somebody needs to show those on TV again.

Tin Hunkin is really great. So much fun to absorb everything he does, especially love his cartoons.

He has a Youtube Channel too.
