I have a compelling reason for there to be some way to upload mp3's from my Rio unit to my PC. Two days ago, I somehow got a virus which not only deleted, but corrupted all 1100 of my mp3's which I've spent 4 years collecting. I now have no music on my PC. On the plus side, I have all my music on my Rio Car player. However, because of Rio's fear of the RIAA I have no way to transfer the songs from the Rio player to my PC. This sucks, especially since I have my PC hooked up to my stereo system and prefer listing to mp3's with that setup when I'm at home, rather than hooking up the Rio and navigating with it's little bitty screen. Not that I don't like the Rio, but its screen and remote hardly compare to a computer moniter, keyboard, and mouse for file navigation.

Anyhow, I think you should be able to somehow upload mp3's from your Rio to your computer in case something happens to the mp3's and your PC, i.e. a virus, hard disk failure, and so on.

Sorry to hear about your loss due to virus. Viruses suck.

Fortunately, there are already several ways you can retrieve the MP3s from your Rio Car player. There's an entry in the FAQ that can give you hints to get you started.

Go get displayserver it rocks ability to download from the empeg/rio and you can have mp3 streaming to winamp all you need on your computer is a network card and a crossover cable unless you already have a LAN

It is quite easy to install

Is displayserver easy to install for a Linux retard like me? Also, where can I find how to install it? I glanced over at the geek site, but I only saw the file w/o much install information.

Thanks all,
Adam

It worked most excellent

okay that is the set of instructions i use and i manage no problem and my knowledge of linux is zip

have a play around with hyperterminal first to get used to it http://empeg.comms.net/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=faq&Number=14202&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=31&part= this is the FAQ link

i can't really give you any hints as to installing and setting up a network card but i managed so it can't be too difficult just hunt around the board for tips but i think the basics is to set up the addresses manually

Enjoy displayserver really is great once you get into it. For full effect install franks IR hacked kernal http://empeg.dyndns.org/empeg/ir_trans_kernel/1.03rc1/ which also lets you use one of the pioneer steering wheel remotes. This can be installed using tonys logo editior

Hope this is a help aslk around you will found this board very helpful and friendly

That set of instructions neglects to teach you how to use RZ to send the file to the Empeg. It says to use FTP. But if you're a newbie, you haven't got FTP installed.

So the first step in those instructions should be to RW then RZ then send the file from hyperterminal.

I stated to use hyperterms "send file" option.
The bash shell on the empeg automagically starts rz when it sees certain escape codes, which are sent by hyperterm when transfer is started

IIRC, those escape codes are "rz", enter. Cunning hack, no?

Roger - not necessarily speaking for empeg

I have several times made the mistake of selecting "send file"
Where the correct should be "transfer -> Send File".

Send File just dumps everything to the terminal.
Transfer -> Send File uses Zmodem.

(But this is TeraTerm, not Hyperterminal)

Actually, it doesn't. Zmodem's preamble includes "rz\r" - bash wouldn't stoop to recognising a zmodem transmit sequence...

(who implemented zmodem lots of times in bbs & terminal software!)

I keep learning...
I always saw some crap on the terminal before the transmit started, so I was assuming there was some sequence. I just started portmon and indeed, it sends rz...
As a unix guy, I should have assumed it would be that simple...
