Probably the wrong place to post this but how in the heck do I get a prompt on my Rio. I read the developer FAQ and it said to hook up via serial and press q. This didn't work.

I installed the 1.03 "DEVELOPER" image,.. and I thought this would gimme a prompt somewhere. I connected to the Rio via serial,.. fired up minicom and I could see all of the Rio boot information but no prompt. I pressed q (and every other key) and nothing happened. Is it a super secret how to get into this thing?

Thanks, Aaron Newsome

The prompt is available via a terminal program such as Hypterterminal. There is a FAQ entry on this subject, check it out.

As I said in my post,.. I did read the FAQ,.. or a FAQ at least. It said to press q. I did,. it didn't do anything. Instead of rehashing what I said I did already,.. you might have posted a link to what you thought was the authoritative text on the subject.

It should just be "q" once the player is running when the developer image is installed. Check to make sure you are using no flow control, (you are seeing the boot messages, so the speed and such is fine). Also, it could be a damaged serial cable. Swap the cable around, and see if the boot messages are no longer displayed, but hitting q once the player boots dumps it into standby. I had a cable with a bad pin, and this was what I observed.

What program are you using? Minicom, or something else?

Going down the settings in minicom, it should be:
A - /dev/(device for the com port you are using)
E - 115200 8N1
F - No
F - No

If these match your setup, try a different serial cable, or try some other device to verify the one you are using is working. It's a standard null model cable. Beyond that, it could be a problem with the serial port on either your system or the empeg.

Another test you could do is try to see if emptool can talk to the empeg via serial.

Thank you. Turning flow control off did the trick. I am now a happy shell user.

Sorry, I had forgotten you were Linux-only. My FAQ only deals with Hyperterminal under Windows, and you probably didn't notice the red arrow next to "flow-control:None" since your Linux software didn't have that screen.
