My apologies if this has been covered already, but I don't remember anyone mentioning that empeg.com doesn't resolve anymore. I'd hate to see it just disappear or become a linkfarm...

I'd be happy to host it myself, I just hope it's not gone...

I'm seeing it fine. Last I knew, it moved to being hosted off Google, David Moss is still around somewhere keeping it going. Noticed the changeover about a week or two back, when someone pointed out the latest software link was broken.

empeg.com is not resolving, but www.empeg.com is:

[christian@shonky ~]$ nslookup empeg.com
Server: 220.233.0.3
Address: 220.233.0.3#53

Non-authoritative answer:
*** Can't find empeg.com: No answer

[christian@shonky ~]$ nslookup www.empeg.com
Server: 220.233.0.3
Address: 220.233.0.3#53

Non-authoritative answer:
www.empeg.com canonical name = ghs.google.com.
ghs.google.com canonical name = ghs.l.google.com.
Name: ghs.l.google.com
Address: 72.14.203.121

Ahh, that's what it is. I never type "www" anymore.

Right. Typically domain.com would point to the same IP as www.domain.com but it's certainly not always the case.

And thats why I didn't notice, Safari automatically tried www.empeg.com when empeg.com failed to resolve.

I thought all the main browsers did that? If it can't find it then it'll add www at the front and then a bunch of TLDs like .com, .org etc...

IE8 doesn't seem to with the Google toolbar installed. Google toolbar (as the default search engine) does recommend trying with the www and provides a link to do so.

And apparently Chrome doesn't do it either.

Historically, shouldn't it be done on the server-side?

No. You want your DNS server to guess what site you meant? :P Did you used to work for Verisign during their Sitefinder project?
