Harmony One. Slipped off the arm of the couch, onto hardwood floor. Remote fully functional but screen is cracked and top half of screen unreadable. Logitech support says, "sucks to be you".
Some folks on the internet have said it's a fairly straightforward LCD replacement procedure, the trick is finding the replacement part. Most folks cannibalize from a remote with a good screen that is otherwise undesirable for other reasons.
Anyone here on this forum have one they want to sell me?

Logitech *should* do a replacement from what I've heard. They offered my brother a replacement for his cracked screen 880. They just replaced his One because the paint is all peeling off, via the same procedure. Basically they send you a new one and disable the old one through their web site.
You should contact them again over the phone an escalate the issue.
I'm surprised they don't send you a new remote, since it would cost more money to buy a replacement LCD in single quantities than a whole new remote at their BOM cost.
Personally, I'll never buy another Harmony product again. Hardware quality is abysmal and software is even worse. I no longer recommend them to friends either.

Logitech *should* do a replacement from what I've heard. Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for contacting Logitech Customer Care.
I see that you have sent us an email on 10/10/2010. I apologize for the delay in getting back to you, and thank you for your patience. I am sorry to hear that the screen on your Harmony remote is damaged, and I can certainly look into this for you.
Unfortunately, this type of damage is not covered under the hardware warranty for your remote. Also, Logitech does not offer any repair services for Harmony products at this time. I am sorry for the inconvenience.
Thank you once again for contacting Logitech Customer Care.
Regards,
Duncan Logitech Customer Care

Don't hold your breath on this one, but a buddy at work has/had a dead Harmony (w/good LCD). I'll see if he's (1) still got it, and (2) will part with it.
Cheers

Oh, and it may be possible to find a new LCD from some place like Digikey, given the part numbers from the old one (requires disassembly).

My wife managed to destroy my precious Harmony remote the same way - repeatedly dropping it on the hardwood floor. I've just managed to live without it .

Sounds like a good market for Otterbox to get into.

Don't hold your breath on this one, but a buddy at work has/had a dead Harmony (w/good LCD). I'll see if he's (1) still got it, and (2) will part with it. His was an 880 -- stopped taking a charge. He's hanging onto it for now, though. I did find this very useful thread for 880/890 screen problems.. sounds like there's probably someone on eBay selling replacement LCDs, maybe even for your One. -ml

Thanks so much for checking on that for me, Mark.
I might decide it's just easier to buy a whole new remote. :-)

If you're willing to spend more money, go for something from Universal Remote Control (URC). At least they repair everything - not to mention their remotes are a lot more robust than the Logitech stuff.

I'd already settled on the style of programming that they have on the Harmony devices, and I've done a lot of work getting the programming Just Right on the thing.
I remember there was a thread a while back where we argued about the stateful and stateless forms of universal remote programming. Although I hate the software that Logitech uses to set up the remote, once it's set up, I really like the remote itself and want to stick with it.

That's cool. Though URC does track states - the "programming" is more involved as it's much more open to customization. You assign your own variables to track states for instance.
My 880 is just barely hanging on, with new buttons every day becoming more and more problematic. With the URC stuff I'm moving over completely to RF from the remote to a sort of command center. That command center actually gets programmed with all the macros and longer sequences, so when you fire commands from the remote, transmission is instantaneous. The command center box can then handle everything on its own, including timed events, etc. It also supports voltage and video sensing and output via IR, RS232 and USB keyboard emulation (which I'll also be using).
Anyway, I still suggest you call Logitech on the phone and try to escalate the issue. As mentioned, my brother was offered a replacement 880 OUT OF WARRANTY even, for a broken screen. This was only just last year. His One replacement was just within the past couple of months and in-warranty.

This was only just last year. Good suggestion. Not bad: I get a half-price coupon. Still bloody expensive but better than the Ebay prices for the most part.

Price with the half-price coupon: 125.00, total price with tax: 136.89.
Thanks for continuing to nag me about calling them on the phone. I'm surprised they didn't offer me the same service over email, but ah well.
There are some used ones on Ebay for a bit cheaper, but for just a few extra bucks I'm buying directly from Logitech and getting another 1-year warranty with the new remote I'm getting.

Well I hassled them about a dodgy Volume - button on a 785 and they wouldn't have a bar of it claiming 1 year was the warranty even though the website said it was 2 years (and it was within 2 years)
And the software is so painful to setup means I will probably look to URC when it properly dies.
