I've also apparently got five invitations for Google Domains, if somebody wants in on their DNS registration service.

I would like one, or actually two if nobody else is interested. Thank you in advance!

PM me with your Gmail address. I've got all of my Domain invites left and I think one Inbox invite left.

All of my Inbox invitations are now gone. I've still got Domain invites left.

I was thinking about asking for a domain invite, but after looking over their page, I don't understand why I want one. It seems that Google is going to start acting as a domain registrar, with prices and features that are reasonably competitive with existing registrars (but not the cheapest). Am I missing the compelling feature that would make me switch my domains over?

Dan was nice enough to give me an invite and I tested it out by transferring one of my domains over. To answer your question, there's no killer feature that makes it absolutely necessary to sign up with Google instead of the hundreds of other registrars out there. Here's what appeals about it to me, and why I might start moving some of (but not all) my domains over:

1) Clean - The difference between GoDaddy and Google Domains is stark. It's as big a difference as the original Google search engine home page was to all the others. There is NO extra junk on the page, and no up-selling.

2) Easy - I guess it's related to the cleanliness, but it was an extremely easy process to transfer the domain from my old registrar.

3) Privacy - Google is apparently throwing Who-is privacy in for free. I'm not sure how they're doing it because when you choose that option there's something about registering it through a third party registrar. That was a little suspicious.

That's pretty much it. It's extremely no-frills, but that's pretty refreshing when it comes to domain registrars. Admittedly I'm quite biased when it comes to Google in general, but I'm not going crazy over this service. I just think it's nice and I'll probably move some of my lesser domains over to it.

For other domain offerings, hover.com or gandi.net have been also good. Essentially for a few years there hasn't been any good reason to stay or continue using GoDadday. Anything is better then them.

Agreed 100%

Nearly all of my domains have been registered through my web host, Bluehost. They're fine and the DNS records are easy enough to figure out. I've supported users on GoDaddy, and there's something about their control panel that makes it so hard to figure out how to edit the records. Network Solutions is even worse.

Thanks for the review. I agree that no-frills would be refreshing. I only have 2 domains that I admin (for my wife's theatre company), so switching wouldn't be a high priority, just to get no-frills. smile And, though I like Who-is privacy, I haven't noticed any significant intrusions from my currently open registrations.

Were I to need to register them now, I'd probably start with Google, simply due to branding -- since I'm not deeply involved in the web space, I don't know who the "good" companies are, so Google would win out.

Anyway, good to know the option exists, at least.

I do, and it's enough to get me to register more current and future domains with Google. I regularly get spammy postal mail because of my domain registrations.

FYI, Google added three new invitations to everybody's Inbox account. I've now got two left, and everybody from here who got one should have three more...

Is it still in invite-only mode? I thought they had opened it up.

I've tried to use Inbox, but I just can't give up the control. I think I've also gotten too used to using my email inbox as a to-do list, and Inbox doesn't work that well for the way I do things.

I guess I also don't need it because as of yesterday I officially got myself back to inbox zero. I'm looking at an empty folder now and it feels great smile

Of course, I have four different checklists in Google Keep to take care of... smile

It seems to be. I took a quick glance at it, and I'm not to sure about it. I'll poke at it some more later.

Google Keep? Great, now I gotta go figure out what that is! :p

Been having the inbox tab take 10-20%+ of my CPU (confirmed in the chrome task manager) - a usage that will drop off to zero if I refresh the tab.

Something a bit wonky there so I've stopped using it for now because it's very battery-unfriendly...

I've also seen high usage (relatively) on Android.
