Guys,

Does anyone have any recommendation for good wireless headsets, to be used on a good Onkyo amplifier. Good sound quality matters, and a charging dock is very welcome.
They need to connect to a traditional analog stereo headset jack, so no USB.

I do not know what price range to look at as I am completely new to wireless ones.
I don't mind investing some money in quality, but I'd happily stay away from anything pointlessly and expensively "audiophile".

Thank you!

I have the Sennheiser, and it sucks. Buy another brand.

Mmm.. good topic!

I think a set of these would be quite handy as well. Our new home has a single cavernous room in the middle, with the MythTV setup there off to one side. Being able to watch a movie late at night without waking other occupants could be handy!

I'd like a new set as well. The senns sound great under ideal conditions, but those conditions are that the transmitter be within a meter on the right side. I normally listen with the transmitter on the left side (the receiver is in the right headphone) about a half meter away, and I still get static. They also stupidly put a 'tune' knob on the headphone and it's easy to bump it and lose the signal.

Are you guys referring to the Sennheiser RS series?

Here's their range.

If you get statics so easily, I wonder how good their "digital wireless" actually is.

So, some of these wireless headsets use Kleers digital wireless, which I am just now reading and trying to learn about.

I assume Kleers uncompressed digital wireless signal is better than analog radio? I mean, if using the classic stereo jack from the Amp, an ADC must be in the base, and a DAC has to be in the headset, so I am not sure how that impact, if it does, sound perception. But, at least I would assume no static.

Mine's a TR series, but it's such a work of crap, I'm not likely to buy anything with the sennheiser name on it again.

Larry, can I ask which TR in particular? I am just curious to know if it is one of those using Kleers.

In any case, they are expensive. I am not spending € 180 unless I know it sounds good at 4m distance.

Mine's definitely analog FM, no Kleer, which is something digital.

Thanks Larry. Well, there's hope Kleer works, then.

Have I been misusing these terms?

I don't think so. I've also always used them the same way.

I actually think you're right. It's me using the wrong term. I'll edit the subject. Thanks!

That sounds a bit harsh (a-ha... no pun intended). I have two pairs of their wired headphones (HD-600 and HD-280) -- both have served quite well for over a decade, though part of the plastic casing on the HD-280 snapped after getting scrunched during a trans-Atlantic flight several years ago. A former cube-mate of mine had a pair of their wireless headphones (don't recall the model), and he had no complaints about them. Mind you, he used them in an environment where he wasn't more than a few feet away from the source...

If what I have was wired, I'd be totally happy, but the wireless connection is crap. It would have been so easy to do it right, but they opted not to.

I know it's de regueur these days for well established formerly quality companies to sell crap with their name on it and hope it's enough. I'll never buy Klipsch again for the same reason.

I don't know anything about wireless headphones. It would be nice late nights sometimes to be able to listen with the volume up...

Do they run bluetooth or some other codec? I know my bluetooth headset can be hit hard by my cordless phone or - more commonly - my wifi (on 2.4).

Some use a simple analog radio.

Others are bluetooth (which however compresses music)

Others use this digital Kleer (non-compressed), which I just learned about.

One thing I've considered are a Bluetooth A2DP sender and receiver, many of which can work with a "normal" pair of headphones. These are available from a bunch of no-name companies for $20-$30.

What I currently do, which makes me quite happy, is that I have a really long cable (http://www.amazon.com/Grado-Extension-Cable-4-57m-Headphone/dp/B0006DPNNK). No batteries. No worries.

Bluetooth aptX is a supposedly better codec (still lossy) created by CSR.

I'll offer that many digital solutions are bad for watching tv as they introduce enough of a delay that the sound is out of sync with the video.

Ok, yet Sennheiser describes one of its digital models as good for movies. Also, you can adjust audio/video synch with most receivers, and, i would guess, most recent tvs?

Ok,so I ended up buying the Sennheiser Rs 180 (Kleer digital wireless), on Amazon at € 180. Quite expensive ma fortunately sound quality is quite impressive, anywhere in my livingroom, as well as other rooms in the apartment.

I hope further usage confirms this.
