My rotary encoder finally gave up the ghost (I was on my 2nd one already). I temporarily replaced my display board with one from a backup empeg to get a working rotary encoder. (Stripped a standoff bolt but that's another thread.)

But the backup unit's display board didn't have a lighting kit installed, it was factory stock.

Even though I have spare encoders, after much deliberation, I decided that it would be easier for me to desolder the lighting kit bits from the old display board and solder them into the backup display board, than it would be to do another rotary encoder replacement.

Success. But I'm a little crazy perhaps.

Congratulations! I would have tackled the encoder -- moving the lighting kit can be rather tricky, especially the 4-gang resistor for the buttons.

I actually did really good on that tiny little resistor. Helped to have a slightly-more-expensive soldering iron, and a big magnifying glass on a stand. A good flux pen and some care, and boom, done.

The most troublesome part turned out to be desoldering the button LEDs in a way that left the old display board's buttons still usable and in good shape. Though I'm sure I could have tracked down the specs and bought new ones, I didn't want to wait.
