I've read the FAQ on steering wheel remotes, and have seen other posts on various remotes, what I'd like to know is exactly what remotes can I use with the EMPEG, preferbly a steering wheel remote or stalk.

I have a Pioneer head unit so I cant use any pioneer remotes.
I don't understand the kenwood steering wheel remote, it's wired?, wouldn't it tangle?

also how would I use the Sony RMX-4S remote with my MK2?
can I attatch it to one of the existing stalks on the car, i.e. indicator lights stalk, or window wiper stalk.

to use the sony stalk remote you either need to buy a tuner which has an input for that remote or make the converter designed by someone on this bbs to connect it to the serial port.

as far as I know the remote is designed to be attached to the steering colum. I had one for my sony head unit and I used to just hold it my had and didn't attatch it to anything

I haven't heard much about it any more since it was announced the tuner was going to have the input on it

here is the home page of the person that made it

Sony wired stalk controller plugs into tuner module. You cannot attach it to an existing stalk - it is a stalk itself, designed to be mounted on either side of steering column, presumably bellow any existing stalks. In some cars some other position (e.g. dashboard behind the wheel) might be convenient.

Any Kenwood IR remote can be used with empeg (with varying functionality, of course - some are quite bare bones). Those designed to be mounted on the steering wheel consist of a small box with buttons intended to be glued on the back side of the wheel, within the reach of driver's fingertips while in normal driving position. From the box leads a short cable with a LED transmitter at the end. One glues that to the back side of the wheel, too, choosing the position so that empeg 'sees' the transmitter with the wheel centered. (This is similar to Pioneer steering wheel remote, except that it mounts on inner side of the wheel rim.) My experience with those remotes is mixed - they are conveniently at one's fingertips all the time, but it is difficult to find good position for the transmitter where it will have unobstructed view of the player (sometimes it is better to position it so that IR light is reflected off the driver). Moreover, direct sunlight (frequent occurence in my canvas-roof Twingo in sunny Croatia) tends to swamp the weak IR signal completelly (or perhaps I should change bateries more often ).

Um, the unit you linked to here is for when you don't want to buy a tuner - it is used to interface to a Sony stalk remote over the serial port. In the US at least you can buy converters for some cars that make the steering wheel buttons behave like a Sony stalk controller. Then you can plug the converter into your Sony head unit (or empeg tuner) and continue to use the steering wheel buttons.

maybe I should put that in the wish list section, however there's no point now is there!!.....

cheers,

Support for the Sony stalk controller (provided by the tuner module) is our solution for this, decided upon long before there was any end of line issue.

yea I saw that however Im using my head unit's AUX IN with the EMPEG, and do not require the tuner module. I'd like to use the sony stalk remote, however was wondering if anyone was making these controllers.
Eventually I'll buy a tuner module, because of the EOL, however is costs me NZD$300 to get one :) I cant justify this for remote functionality...not just yet anyway :P

If you feed empeg into a Pioneer HU AUX input, I sugest that you get both Pioneer and Kenwood steering wheel remotes. They both can be mounted without interfering with each other (e.g. Kenwood on the left-hand side of the back of the wheel, Pioneer on the right side of the rim, as on the picture linked), and the codes don't interfere, either.

Blaupunkt has a nice line steering wheel of remotes. In my opinion they look and fit a lot better than Kenwood of Pioneer remotes. Is there any possibility to make them work with empeg? I allready ordered much cheaper kenwood remote but maybe i would consider change-ing them in the future when somebody could find out what the ir-codes are to make them work.

Sorry, forgot that John did the steering wheel buttons to empeg serial port converter as well. Is another solution for when you don't want to buy a tuner

There is, if it works with the same carrier frequency (38 kHz, I believe) as those from Kenwood and Pioneer (and Rio's own). You will need ir_hack kernel and appropriate code translation file. Browse through FAQ and threads on making Pioneer remote work.
