That's almost exactly how I installed the head unit into my Mk.3 Supra - I plan to use the blanking panel (which is MDF in my case) for some custom engine controls (boost control, second fan and so forth).

Thank god for hot melt glue.

Rob

nice. I am selling my 4Runner right now and as soon as I can I am going to get a silver WRX. I'm not to keen on dremmeling out some door for speaks, but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. Is that the dealer option short throw shifter? and did you get the dealer to install it? Btw, is that a 40oz. of Schlitz in the background of one of your install pics? Let's crank up the Dr. Dre.

Nobody bothered to think of me.

I could have CNC cut a piece of Plexiglas that would have covered over the whole area all the way up to where it curves out and left only an opening for the Empeg.

Come on people. This is what I do for a living.

Shlitz.... hmm.... Anybody remember Pfeiffer Beer? Check my sig.. www.pfeifferbeer.com

DarkStorm - I had no idea. Can you do metals too? I have some ideas for some stuff I need made....

I originally thought I would not have to dremel the door. No matter how thin of an adapter I made, it was hitting the door, so cutting the sheet metal was a last ditch move. I would recommend just doing 4".... I mean, how often do you really have people back there?

The short shifter is from Kartboy. I got it for $125 for the shifter + bushings. It is essentially the same thing as the STi factory option, but you can install it yourself and it only takes basic tools + 15 minutes of time. Do a search on "Kartboy" at www.i-club.com. I've only had it in for a week, so no details yet - but I do love the feel of it much better.

Anyone considering getting a Subaru, don't get any options. Instead, go to www.subaruparts.com and compare prices. It is SO much cheaper that way. For example - I paid $71 from the factory to have a special air filter. That site has it for $35. The alarm is a several hundred dollar option as well - but all of the wiring is in every WRX and the parts only cost $130 from the site and no special tools are needed (all wiring is already in place.)

Did you guys like the exterior shots? I'm rather proud of them :)

Yeah I keep meaning to get around to that.. I bought the domain (projectsupra.com) but you know how it is with new web sites. I'll get to it sooner or later!

Trust me i know. I have several unused domains just waiting for more sparetime. Including a domain for my empeg install.

Yeah, I had reservations about hosting this on my family site... I really don't know where to put it and I can't see it having enough interest to survive as "www.projectWRX.com".... maybe when it is "done" i'll give the audio part to someone... so if anyone is working on an empeg install page (again - with no more being made, how long will that have any interest?) they can use whatever. Or even link to me in a frame....

Let me get some coffee so I stop babbleing.

The interest will problably fade away in the coming month. Though, i'll keep it as long as it works or 'till something better comes along - the last thing i doubt will happen in a long time.

Anyway, i'd be happy to see your installation pictures though a seperate frame or a link ;)

What did you use to support the rear of the empeg's cage in the slot?

Oops, sorry, didn't see the post asking about securing the sled.

The WRX has plates that screw into the sides of the factory radio. The space between these plates is a bit too narrow for the empeg. JimH was able to s-q-u-e-e-z-e his in the lower half of the opening, but doing the same on the top is near impossible without breaking something. So... I dremeled the screw holes of the plates to give them a little play. Then, I was able to s-q-u-e-e-z-e the empeg in the top half of the slot. The fit is so tight (along with glueing the sled to the dash bezel) that no straps were needed.

In my Focus, the dash adapter from Crutchfield was nice enough that other than bending some of the tabs on the sled, I didn't need to secure the back either.
