You will be much happier with a Mark2 unit. They are a better unit all-around. They have better features and fewer hardware bugs. There is less of a chance of having ground loop noise on the line-level outputs of a Mark2 for example. It also has more RAM.

The Rio Car (Mark2a) is even better, as it has even more RAM and some minor hardware improvements (diode in the ignition circuit, if I recall correctly, for example).

Biggest reasons to upgrade for me were the background noise and ethernet...
(mainly box of Rice Crispies that was in my Empeg mk1..)

...Still (barely, pending 1.1/2.0/TeAsE release) proud to have owned an Empeg since 00287

Any chance you could find out the serial number of that unit?

Dignan,
Where can I find a larger image of your logo? I've just spent 5 minutes looking at it...
I thought you mentioned some time ago it was Dali, but can't remember when or what

Can you elaborate on the crispies, is it that bad?
Also elswhere on this site I read the tuner is shite, is this right?

Whether or not you get the "crispies" on a Mk1 is highly dependent on your particular audio system. The more components you have, the more likely it will happen. For instance, if you have just the empeg and one amplifier, you might be fine.

But if you have multiple amplifiers, or other components complicating the install (external crossovers for example, or you're running the empeg into another stereo), or if the amps are really cheap, or if there's anything wrong with your wiring, then the Mk1will exacerbate any existing ground loops and make them more audible.

The tuner on the Mk1 is not nearly as good as the tuner module for the Mk2/Rio Car. The Mk1 tuner is FM-only and doesn't get as good reception as the newer one.

The new one has very good quality (although some Mk2 tuner users are experiencing bugs in the software which will be corrected by the next software release).

I haven't even bought an amp yet, want to use it purely as a fill for existing radio/cd player. Don't use cassette, or AM and only ever listen to Radio 2 and 4 (Steve Wright, Johnathen Ross, the News Quiz, News Huddlines and the Archers!)
If it gets these ok i'm happy. (is it RDS btw?)

Any empeg is better than no empeg.

Mk1 Has RDS but no AM. There are certainly more TLAs I could use but that will do, LOL, AFAIK...

480US$ in GC seems like a good buy, don't stall on it for too long. Would be worth getting a Rio remote soon though. I have a Mk2 and will get one ASAIC.

Just be sure that you understand... the empeg has to have an amp in order to work. Your existing CD player has an amplifier built into it, the empeg does not. Its outputs are line-level only, and cannot drive speakers directly.
