Ok, I know this may be stupid but don't wannt do something and find out later that I didn't need to do it.
I'm installing the unit myself, amp already installed and hooked up etc.. Now for the empeg, 88 Dodge Shadow doesn't have a standard ISO connector, so do I cut the one on the empeg off and hook up one I can buy at wal-mart. I'm guessing so as this is the only way I can realy think to do it. Stupid question I know.

I prefer not to cut anything off of anything.. ideally, get a pre-made convertor cable from Crutchfield (they cover most vehicles). If you have to wire something up yourself, then use the ISO pigtail cable that comes with the player so you don't have to hack at the empeg wiring loom.

So you say I should do it like this
Empeg---iso--converter---converter----car
Hope that makes sense, so basicly get a connector that fits the empeg with dangling wires, then the one for my car with the dangling wires and connect them all.

This is covered in excruciating detail in the section of the FAQ titled "What are the most common installation problems?"
Did you see that part? ___________

Yea I read it but the way it's worded it sound like it's contradicting itself.
"The empeg ships with its own ISO wiring adapter in case your car doesn't have an ISO connector and you still need to solder the wires. In that case, you can either cut off the empeg connector and do it like any other car stereo, or you can use their ISO adapter. If you use their adapater, the connections will go like this:"
To the best of my knowledge in order to use the iso connector for each car makers you would indead have to cut the empegs iso connector off in order to connect the you bought with the dangling wires on 1 side and the snap on connector on the other end that connects to the car.

I'm stupid, just thought I would point that out though. Just ignore me if I'm not making sense. ;)

Sorry, that's not what I meant. What I meant, is that I realized the text wasn't particularly clear.
It just dawned on me... is it possible that you didn't get supplied the ISO adapter, and that's the source of your confusion? ___________

Okay, I drew pictures.
The FAQ section of the new Riocar.org site now has a re-worded version of that FAQ entry, as well as pictures.
Take a look at the pictures and let me know if it looks a bit more clear now. ___________

Nice pics Tony! One thing you don't seem to mention though is that you (in Europe anyway) can often also buy direct ISO<->X (X = Honda or Nissan or Ford or ... ) adapters.

You should have received an ISO connector with dangling wires with your empeg (if you didn't, write to support and I am sure they will send you one). But as was mentioned several times, various companies (oft-mentioned Crutchfield among others) sell ready-made ISO-to-virtually-anything converter cables. If you locate one of them, you have to do only plugging, no cutting and splicing.

Damn, yea that would be the problem, I didn't recieve that connector. If I had of I wouldn't have this problem of course and be all confused. Now will support supply this even if I bought this unit 2nd hand and they failed to have one or ability to supply one?
Also on another note, if I do e-mail support and they can supply me one. What about the bumper stickers and window clings for the empeg as well.. would love to get one of those as well =)

If they are in a friendly mood (and they usually are) support will supply you an ISO pigtail adaptor/caple. If not you can quite easily buy one yourself. They are pretty cheap, and it's not like you bought the empeg new and it was missing. The person you bought it from must have forgotten to put it in the box. Personally I would be looking for a cable that connected from ISO direct to the stereo connector on the cars wiring loom - is much cleaner. Unfortunately some idiot cut the connector of the loom in my car and I have had to try and figure out everything for myself. Not very nice :-(
Last I heard the guys still had a heap of stickers, so if you ask them really nicely I'm sure they will send you some. If not ask me really nicely and maybe I can send you an empeg one (I picked up a couple of extras at the owners meet) :-)

(bonks himself on the head)
Yea, I should have thought of that when I originaly posted. I do tech support myself and hate it when people leave out important info.
I did e-mail support and from the e-mail I got back like 2 minutes later it seems that they will indeed be sending me a new connector and the stickers I asked for as well =)
