I dunno where Frank's been lately, but I have IRTrans working in my 2.0 kernel. However I made enough changes to it that I can't relase it as-is. What I might be able to do is start from a clean 2.0 kernel and add-in the IR trans patch to that. If I have time tonight I'll give it a shot.

that would be apperciated.. ir_trans will allow me to take the hexi code from another remote and assign it to a empeg function right?

Yessir that's the idea. I'll do my best to get a 2.0 IRtrans kernel posted tonight. You don't have any other kernel mods right now do you?
Such a kernel will quite obviously come with no warranty expressed or implied, as all kernels do.

That's not how kernels work on the Empeg. The current kernel is in flash RAM and I don't know of any way to "save off" a current kernel image. Maybe others here have done it and can help you out.
I was under the impression there was a kernel hack associated with Frank's display server, though I doubt this was part of the automated install. I think it enabled the EmpegApplet to control the player by faking IR codes. IIRC, This functionality is also built into the IRtrans kernel.

Well not intentionally. :p The thing is that the kernel hack is only one piece of the puzzle. You need a file with the remote code mapping you wish to use. Check Frank's readme for an explanation of this, and look in that directory for some examples. By default I think the kernel includes some codes for Pioneer steering wheel remotes, but it may not (by default) map the button you wish to use to the exact functions you want. That is left to the user, but Frank gives some good help in the README with the hex codes the Pioneer remotes send out.
Anyway there's always a risk in installing a kernel. The very worst thing that would happen is you'd have to re-do your 2.0 upgrade. -Tony

Or you could do what i intend to do and wait for frank to do the really hard stuff and then at the next EMPEG meet give him a real good bottle of wine for his efforts for everyone.

I would love a stable v2.0 kernel for my Pioneer remote...it worked really well with Frank's v1.2 but crapped out in v1.3...I haven't been able to use it for awhile now and I am too weak with Linux to do it on my own....

Okay people, here is a completely unofficial 2.0b3 IR-Trans kernel. You have to unzip it and untar it, the file is named zImage. It works for me, it should work for you. If it doesn't, you probably need mappings other than the defaults which Frank has in the kernel. Those defaults are as follows:
Source = Translated
0x00A25D0A = 0x00B94614
0x00A25D0B = 0x00B94615
0x00A25D43 = 0x00B9460B
0x00A25D42 = 0x00B9460A
0x00A25D12 = 0x00B9465E
0x00A25D1A = 0x00B9461F
0x00A25D0C = 0x00B9460E
0x00A25D40 = 0x00B9461B
0x00A25D41 = 0x00B9460F
0x00A25D19 = 0x00B94603
0x00A25D0D = 0x00B94600
You'll need to read Frank's documentation if you need to change mappings, which is a matter of "catting" a file to the /proc/empeg_ir device. These defaults are based on a Pioneer steering wheel remote.
For those who really don't feel comfortable mucking around with their init script or working out their own IR codes, I will try to do a few custom ones as my time permits. I will, however, need to know what your source codes are and what you want them to do on your Empeg. I know the buttons for the CD-SR77 because I own it, but I can't get "source" hex codes for other remotes which I do not own. You can discover what codes your remote is sending by... uh... there's some utility somewhere, help me out here somebody. But I encourage you to try to follow Frank's instructions, the worst thing that can happen is you'll waste a little time and you'll have to re-flash the 2.0b3 upgrade, but you might learn something, and it's fun!
Well, let me know if this works for you guys. I am not the author of this patch, so any questions/suggestions/compliments should go to Frank, he did the work.

quick question im going to read the ir codes with my philips pronto remote and my computer.. last time I did this I remember getting codes like 00012 12312 12321.. something of that style.. would you be able to get these into 0X12323 for me? or do I just use the repeating hex from what I get with my pronto?

Umm errr I dunno. The Empeg may actually read the bitstream that comes from the remote differently, like the bits might be interpreted in the opposite order or something. If you get decimal numbers on whatever program you're using on your PC then just run them through a calculator (windows has a scientific calculator that will do decimal to hex conversion) and try the resuling number. If that doesn't work I really can't help...

Oh before anyone flashes this, UNZIP IT AND UNTAR IT FIRST. You'll get a file called arch/arm/boot/zImage Sorry about all the subdirectories.

Actually, the format is different, but WinZip handles both.
