Empegtaxi is not useful for erasing the previous guy's stuff. For that, you use Emplode. Download emplode from the support section of empeg.com.

"Developer mode" means that you have installed the "developer" version of the firmware to the car player. It allows you to get to a shell prompt on the player. This is also available as a download from the support section of the empeg.com web site.

My web site moved. The new address is linked below.

Since Tony is inexplicably offline... (but not for long )

Developer image is one of two versions of empeg software one can find on download section of empeg site. It allows one to connect a terminal to empeg serial port and do various naughty things.

Tony had problems with his ISP recently (it got bought, his site relocated ). I will try to find it for you.

Wellcome on board!

When I said 'empty' I meant 'copy' the other guys stuff on to my pc for 'safekeeping' ;-)

Is taxi the best to use for this or is there other?

Dirty, yes. Quick? No. That method uses the serial port only, so it's far from quick.

To answer the question more directly:

Since you have a Mark1, EmpegTaxi is your only option at the moment since it uses USB. Other options (displayserver, etc.) use ethernet, which your Mk1 doesn't have.

The problem is that EmpegTaxi only lets you manually grab one song at a time, and you have to know their titles. Depending on the number of songs, this could be a hassle.

In theory, someone could use the Emptool sources to build a windows-based multi-file backup utility that uses USB, but I haven't seen it yet.

Well, more dirty than quick (as it goes over serial), it will take several minutes per tune. OTOH, night is long (let's see, some 350MB long - OK, so nights), and empeg does not require feeding.

Hmm, perhaps giving one of those backup utils a try is not such a bad idea (as always, I recommend ftp, but it does require some Linux knowledge and minor SW surgery on empeg).

Aaargh, MkI, no Ether! Forget ftp!

Sorry guys, meant 'quick thinking' .

OK, next move. Open up, put in PC, make image with ghost, use ghost explorer to restore FIDs.

Happy now!

Hm, since your filetaxi grabs files one by one and the thing does not have Ether, perhaps a week-long zmodem-ing (at some 1GB a day) is not such a bad idea, after all.... How about taring as much as will fit in the space remaining, then filetaxiing it out?

Okay, I occasionally like to do it the 'hard' way!

Well, let's re-think... AHAA! Serial@230400bps.

What z modem program?

SZ (send zmodem)

It's built into the developer version of the software. You type sz at the player's shell prompt and then tell your terminal software (such as hypterterminal) to receive a file via zmodem. Warning: This is very slow.

Before you do this, though, you need to be fairly familiar with poking around at the Linux shell prompt. And you need to know what you want to send. The files are located in drive0/fids and they are not named nicely. You can tell by size which ones are MP3s and which ones are data files. Note that the song data you see in Emplode isn't necessarily contained in the ID3 tags attached to those files. Emplode is a separate database and it doesn't write back to the ID3 tags when you change something. So if the original owner made tag edits in emplode, you won't see those changes reflected in the files you grab.

szfrom empeg side (it's there), some terminal emulator supporting Zmodem protocol on PC side (e.g. HyperTerminal on Windows.).

Do the following:

- Load developer image (use emplode for that)
- Connect empeg to PC using supplied serial cable. (in the case you did not get it, it is a simple null-modem cable with no modem control wires: 2-3, 3-2, 7-7)
- Configure HyperTerminal to 115200, 8 data bits, one stop bit, no parity, no flow control (it's in Edit->properties->Connect to tab->configure button)
- Press q [enter] to stop the player
- Choose the directory to receive files (Transfer->Receive file); cancel when finished. You will see some garbage in the terminal window.
- cd /drive0/fids
- sz *0 (or sz * if you want tag files as well). You may get 'command line too long' error message, in which case you will have to do that piecemeal, such as sz [123]*0 etc
- Enjoy the picture for the moment, then go continue your normal life for a week or so (this transfers around 1GB a day)

Good luck!
