I am still trying to figure out why my "rebuilding database" takes so long. Well, I'm doing a capture on the serial port, and I see that there's some kind of problem with DHCP... This section repeats infinitely...

Why is this happening over and over again? The empeg did get an ip address of 10.251.6.21. Is this the reason for my firewall slow down too?

I would say that these two messages:
dhcp lease/renew/rebind -1/0/0
DHCP after tweak, dhcp lease/renew/rebind -1/-1/-61
might have something to do with your problem. I'm not exactly sure what values are supposed to do what here, but my empeg recieves MUCH bigger values here. Yours things that it has to renew it's IP lease with the DHCP server at VERY SHORT intervals. That would definitely slow the server down.
Can't tell you whose fault it is though. Either the server is sending the wrong values, or the empeg is interpreting them incorrectly.

Hm. Think I just fixed it. Kinda. I set my DHCP on my firewall for a lease of 1 day instead of unlimited. Now I don't see a repeating event...
I do get a different error though...

That error is related to the stutter in playback on boot problem. Looks like the player/decoder can't find where in the mp3 file to start playing again.

Ok, last long msg... It looks like the DHCP proBlem has been fixed, but the rebuild still takes a long time. Check this error out... This was captured during a sync.

What's that HD mounting problem?
E2fsck is complaining that /etc/mtab doesn't exist. But /etc/mtab isn't meant to exist on a car player: you can ignore that warning. It has still fsck'd the disks.

I believe that's normal (I hope that's normal, as I see it too!)
I think it's because we don't have a /etc/mtab containing all the information about mounts (because there's no writable filesystem). I've heard of symlinking /etc/mtab to /proc/mounts but never tried it myself. Anyone?

Doing so used to break fsck, for reasons we could never be bothered to figure out. That was several versions of fsck ago, though, so it might be OK nowadays.

So either the empeg didn't understand the unlimited lease message it was getting from the server properly (empeg bug) or the server was sending the unlimited lease info incorrectly. Try posting this in the bugs section and see if you get any reaction.

Empeg bug. Watch as it bogusly frobnicates the 0xFFFFFFFF into -61. FITNR.

Speaking of DHCP: my empeg use hardcoded IP address (relevant part of config.ini: [Network]
Gateway=0.0.0.0
Netmask=255.255.255.0
IPAddress=192.168.0.29
DHCP=0 )
It seems to do something DHCP-related on boot, anyway, followed by the obligatory single seek error: No secondary hard disk

Apart from a brief stutter a second or two into the song, I didn't notice any ill effects of this. Do those DHCP-containing messages just mean DHCP being disabled (I don't remember them from 1.03)? Will stutter be FITNR?

I just had to look it up in the Jargon dictionary. I didn't know that "frob" was short for "frobnicate." It's true what they say about learning something new every day.
frobnicate /frob'ni-kayt/ vt.
[Poss. derived from frobnitz, and usually abbreviated to frob, but `frobnicate' is recognized as the official full form.] To manipulate or adjust, to tweak. One frequently frobs bits or other 2-state devices. Thus: "Please frob the light switch" (that is, flip it), but also "Stop frobbing that clasp; you'll break it". One also sees the construction `to frob a frob'. See tweak and twiddle.
Usage: frob, twiddle, and tweak sometimes connote points along a continuum. `Frob' connotes aimless manipulation; `twiddle' connotes gross manipulation, often a coarse search for a proper setting; `tweak' connotes fine-tuning. If someone is turning a knob on an oscilloscope, then if he's carefully adjusting it, he is probably tweaking it; if he is just turning it but looking at the screen, he is probably twiddling it; but if he's just doing it because turning a knob is fun, he's frobbing it. The variant `frobnosticate' has been recently reported.
