I want to know what (if any) programs or ways everyone here normalizes there mp3s? Lets say I have 100 mp3s and a hand full of them are off sync volume wise. What's the best way to go about getting them normalized? If there any good programs that might do this?

Only way I can see this being viable is to decode them all to wavs and recode them using a mp3 encoder w/ normalization. But I don't know how good this will actualy work. I know I can re rip all the cd's but that is waay to much of a hastle, and of course there are several songs I don't have cd's for (had to fill in the gaps to my top 100's some how).

So I leave it up to the wonderfull EMPEG BBS with there all knowing and powerfull knowledge to help me out with a simple solution.

The 'normalize' package in Debian normalises RIFF (wav) files, so to use that you'd have to pipe your MP3s through a decoder and encoder, losing quality. normalize comes with a script, normalize-mp3, which does this.

I don't know of any that work directly on MP3 music, but it ought to be possible.

Ok let me refrase that. How about an easy way to do this on a windows system as I don't wanna format my 2nd machine again just for linux (although I've done it before)

Try MP3Gain at http://www.geocities.com/mp3gain.

It's freeware and it's lossless so you can reverse any changes without loss of mp3 data! Works great for me.

MP3Trim will do this for you by adjusting the volume offset parameter within the MP3 frames, therefore doing it losslessly (no decode/encode passes).

BUT... Remember that almost all of your CDs were already normalized. If songs sound like they are at different volumes, normalization will not usually help.

I believe most of us here have instead adopted the "automatic volume adjustment" add-on feature for the Empeg rather than re-rip/equalize hundreds of albums. It does pretty much exactly what you want (less perfect, more useful), as the tracks are played back.

Yea, I've been using it. It's ok but doesn't work as well as I was hoping. Now I'll continue to use it b/c something is better then nothing of course. I was just wondering if anyone out there knew of a good/fast/easy way to do this. If not no biggie I can live with it and eventually re-rip or find other sources for my lower volume songs when I get bored sometime.
