I do not know if this is a Windows error or an Empeg error.

When I run the setup.exe file to install emplode v2.0b I get this error :

1207:Windows(r) Installer 1.11.2405.0 found. This is an older version of the windows installer. The installation package could not be opened. Contact the vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package.

I am running Win2000 and assume that my Windows Installer is the most recent, but this is an assumption.

Any ideas?

On my windows 2000 box, I get the message about an older version of the installer. However, the installation proceeds normally after that. You're saying the installer hangs for you? Did you unzip it completely and run setup.exe from the same folder as the other files?

Mike, are you aware of this one?

The software does not hang, it just aborts when I click OK.

I did unzip all the files and ran setup from the same directory, all the files are in the same folder. I think the zip file created 4 or 5 files..

This puzzles me, other programs that I install complete just fine.

I think the Installer was updated in SP1 and again in SP2 (I run SP2). If you don't want to go through that, you can download Windows Installer from the below URLs.

Windows Installer for NT and 2000

Windows Installer for 9x and ME

Thanks for the link.

However, I still have the same problem. When I download the installer from the link above and run it, I get a message saying 'the specified service already exists..'

I dont know if it wont run because there is already an Installer on my system or if its telling me that the Installer that I have is the same version as the one I downloaded. If thats the case then I am really puzzled.

There has got to be a problem with my copy of Windows someplace, but Norton Utilities doesn't find anything wrong and neither do I.. hmm.

New developments. I am still having the same problem, but here is the latest..

I installed a brand new hard drive and a clean install of Win2000. My previous drive had an upgrade from Win98 to Win2K and I thought THAT may have been part of the problem. This time it was a brand new, fresh install, complete with Service Pack 2.

I still get the exact same symptoms when trying to install to v2.0b.

Ugh!

WOW, this is the strangest thing I have ever heard of.

Mike, you listening? Still not interested in rolling back to an older InstallShield version, eh?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The WinBlows Installer is a piece of junk...

Hell if I know, but I managed to get v2.0b to install.

Today has been a pretty good day. Since things were going so well I said why not, and tried the install again. It came up with the familiar 'your installer is old.. loser.. get a new one' message but this time when I clicked 'I know' it continued and installed fine with no problems.

I installed the image to my player with no trouble as well.

I booted up the new version of emplode on my PC and was blown away with the way it looked. I was so excited that I came straight here to report my progress, I haven't even poked around in the new software yet. I can see that my afternoon is now shot playing with this.

Note : The only thing I can think of that was going on was this attempt, I re-downloaded the software before installing. Maybe my previous attempts were due to a bad download, I do not know. The previous downloads did not report any problems.. all I know is it works now.

Now, I would have said this right from the very start except for one thing.

The installer package comes in ZIP form. In order to run the setup, you would have had to unzip it. And if there was something wrong with the download, it wouldn't have unzipped without giving you error messages. And surely you would have told us if that were the case.

Correct. It downloaded just fine, and unzipped just fine. Both times. I have worked with PCs for many many years and have seen a lot of quirks, but I cannot explain this one.

I thought that maybe I installed some software after my first attempt that changed something in my system but thought back and don't remember anything.. and I don't really see how that would affect it anyway.

All I know is that it works, and I am pleased.

I'll toss in another request for MD5sums of all downloads. Then we'd have a way to know if the download was good or not...
