Since this post deals with running Emplode v2.x b7, I am posting it here.

Does anyone know if it is possible to run both version of emplode (v1.03 & 2.xbx) on the same windows pc ??

Or is it the old, unistall/install routine?

I am sorry if I have repeated this question, but either my searching skills suck, or the keyword index is pooched.

Thanks

It is possible but you have to keep careful track of which one is which.

But it's a moot point since emplode 1.03 won't talk to a 2.0 player, and vice-versa. Just install whichever one goes with your installed player software.

Perfect thanks.

Also, I think I may have a bad sector on one of my disks, here is an excerpt from the terminal apon player startup:
Press 'q' now to go into development mode. You Have Zero Seconds To Comply...
Starting player
empeg-car 1.03.
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, CHS=562/0/43, sector=10859
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:03 (hda), sector 10859
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, CHS=562/0/48, sector=10864
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:03 (hda), sector 10864

Is there any way to do a manual fsck ??

fsck won't help you there (ISTR that fsck doesn't map about bad blocks).

If the drive is an IBM, you can remap errors by connecting the drive to a PC and using the ibm DFT (storage.ibm.com). Other manufacturers probably have equivalent tools, but I don't know of them.

Of course, I would recommend that he start shopping for a new drive ASAP...

Well, thanks for the suggestion, and I am doing just that. I have managed to use ghost to copy the contents of my empeg A disk to an image file, so here is hoping that I dont loose anything!

I will keep you posted on the IBM tools recommendations.

One question though, for situations like this is it best to rma the drive directly with IBM, or go through Empeg Support?

Thanks

There was someone posting a warning that ghost might not always put everything
back exactly where it was (sector for sector) which could lead to bad things when
applying a .upgrade file which expect things to be where empegs diskbuilder originally put it.

There's little you can do with that image file. Don't try to restore it to an empeg disk unless you intend to simply hand-copy the FIDs off the restored disk and not actually use it in a player. Details here.

Nuts, well that really bursts my bubble.
Now I have to figure out how to get my music off, since I have a half-assed backup done. And all my new stuff I will have to rerip, but I guess this will allow me to take the crap off my player that I have gotten sick of.

OK, so on another note, the IBM tools indicate this:
Drive Information
Serial Number: xxxx
Failure code: 0x70 - Defective Device
Additional code: 0x77
Test date: 22-01-2002
Technical Result Code (TRC) for RMA: 79775F11

Now back to my previous question: Should I RMA this drive direct with IBM, or should I setup a support incident with Empeg/SB ??(Which case would bring a resolution the quickest? ie a new/fixed disk, and a working empeg)
Or I could go out and buy another disk right now, and have a working empeg at the end of the day, but, the disks from the empeg are too big to fit into my laptop, so I really dont have a desire or need for an extra 18gb laptop disk.
I guess I could sell the defective disk, and have the customer RMA the drive, but I am unsure if there are legal implications with the situation.

Also, is it possible to re-flash the player with my current good disk and reconstruct the database with the existing fids on the disk? to have a runctioning player?
I assume the player software places tunes sequentially across the disks. ie fills the first disk then proceeds to the second disk.

Hugo, Tony, please advise.
Thanks

If the player is still under warranty, the fastest results will be to contact the empeg support team.

If the player is not under warranty, the fastest results will still be to contact the empeg support team, you'll just have to pay them for their time.

Me do such a thing? Never.

While I'm posting, I've only just cleared the backlog of email from the weekend - if anyone is waiting for buttons, I'll probably send them tomorrow.

If only the ext2 maintainers would bother to write proper dump/restore utilities, we'd be (more-or-less) good to go. This is one of the main reasons (almost the only reason) I don't use Linux for mission-critical stuff anymore. If anyone's interested, there is a third-party dump/restore.

I have been running both since my Rio car doesn't seem to like 2.0b7 as much as my Empeg car does, strange but true. My Rio car does have some other issues though and is currently at Cambridge getting, I hope sorted out.
Anyway I haven't noticed any problems and each have their own different icon so mixing them up isn't a problem, 2.0x has a green E and 1.0x has a player icon.
