EMERGENCY: Musicmatch deleted thousands of mp3's

Everyone,
I have been redaing these boards since before I purchased my EMPEG 18 months ago. Never had a lot to say so I haven't posted up until now. I really need help.
I got my 60Gb Mk2a on Wednesday and started to rerip all my cd's so I could load them to the EMPEG at a higher quality. I am using Musicmatch 7.0. I already loaded 11 Gb of music on to the player. Just now I was ripping a CD and while I was waiting I was going thru some song tags and making changes. I came up on a track I wanted to delete and when I did something crazy happened and It deleted all of the MP3 files off of my computer. Any way I can get them back? Or are they gone for good. I wanted to eventually back them all up on CDR.
I remember someone posting that it was possible to put files from the EMPEG back to your computer. Is there really a way to do this? Any help here would be great. I feel like someone just stabbed me in the heart. Some files I downloaded originally and go back almost two years. Thanks in advance for any help.
Dave

New versions of both Jemplode and emplode will download tunes from empeg to disk. File naming is not very flexible, and playlist structure will not be fully reconstructed automatically, but if you tagged the MP3s correctly before uploading them, a utility like MP3TagStudio will take care of that.
Windows gurus: is there a way to 'undelete' files under Windows (if there was not new disk activity on the affected volume). Hm, I guess it depends on version of Windows and file system type...

Ok, DBALKUNJR, if you are using windows 9x series, (95, 98 all editions, ME) then you'0re basically using dos and you have FAT file system. Get an UNDELETE.EXE from any old dos installation floppies (if I am not mistyaken that utility does not come with windows anymore) and use it on the dirs that used to have all your mp3s in. You will ahev to retype the FIST letter of each file name, but you should be able to recover most of them
If instead you are using Windows NT and followers (Windows 2000, Windows XP) that most likely you are using NTFS file system. Get this undelete utility here: http://www.networkundelete.com/ called Network undelete, by Executive sw. There's a 30 day trial version, if I remember well.
If they still make it, on http://www.execsoft.com whioch is their generic website you'll find a free utility, called Emergency Undelete.
Most important, try to not save anything on disk, or you'll delete part of the data still there. Consider that Windows does not perform destructive delete, so data is still there until something new replaces it.
Also, DIskProbe in the Resource kit allows you to view data on disk and copy it to a file, that may help, but it much more time taking and... messy!
Well, let me know. Good luck!

DBALKUNJR,
I work for MusicMatch, and if what you're saying is true, I'm very interested in this because we'll want to fix this ASAP. Could you please send me an email detailing your system configuration (OS, CD-ROM, etc.)? Also, if you could attach the following files from the MusicMatch directory, that would be great.
install.log
mmjblog.txt
mmjb.rpt
Send the files to [email protected] . I'll get one of our programmers on it right away to see if they can figure out what went wrong.

Scott,
When I was deleting a file from musicmatch and from my computer at the same time, a message popped up and I didn't really read it. I just clicked the button and kept going. Next thing I know, poof...no more files. I get these read only messages that always pop up so I just assumed that was what it was and clicked the button so I could keep working. In hind sight a very dumb thing to do. I don't necessarily think that there is a large bug in MusicMatch, but however I do notice that when I click on a file to edit the tag sometimes it will not un highlight others that I had been working on previously. this causes all the selected songs to show up in the edit tag screen. I think that for some reason my entire libray got highlighted, and when I went to click that button it deleted everything. So yes there might be a bug and yes I'm an idiot for not reading the entire message when it came up. I will email those files to look at. Got any ideas how to get my files back?
Dave

I wouldn't be at all surprised if you somehow had all the files highlighted, and the popup box said something like "Are you sure you want to delete these files from your library?". The thing is, the dialog box has an unchecked box which says "Also delete these files from my computer". So, you would have had to check that box to actually delete them from the computer (and not just the library).
I'm not sure what MusicMatch does when you delete the file. I think it's a permanent delete (as opposed to Recycle Bin). I could check on this tomorrow. I assume you did a search of your hard drive to make sure it wasn't just moved or renamed.

Actually, the word is Download, and it can be found when you right-click on a file.
It is only in version 2.0b7 and later of emplode.

You have to have emplode 2.0b7, that's a new beta feature. I don't have it installed at the moment, but menu are quite short... Jemplode does that from Edit menu and from right-click context menu.
Have you tried undeleting?

Actually, I don't have anything later than 2.0b7 at the moment. I just like to word things for posterity.

Yes, I hope the feature really stays (and gets improved) now that empeg probably fell below RIAA sharks' radar...

now that empeg probably fell below RIAA sharks' radar
there's only 4000 or so of us. I doubt that we would be much of a threat compared to the tens of thousands who used Napster (all hail the king) daily.

...when you right-click on a file...
...or just about anything else. If it appears in the tree, or in the RHS, you should be able to select it (or them), and get the "Download" option when you right-click.

Tony,
Thanks for the info. It was right there the whole time, I never nooticed it when copying and pasting files. I feel a lot better now. I found a program for $45 that will recover files deleted out of the recycle bin but really didn't want to spend the
$$$ if I didn't have to.
I also downloaded JEmplode. Is there a way to connect using USB with Windows 98? Right now the options do not show it as a connection option.
Thanks again.
Dave
