Ever increasing densities have seen in the desktop market the upper limit capacity of 137Gb reached and breached (Maxtor bundle their 160Gb beast with a specially commissioned Promise controller to get around this problem). So does the eMpeg have a theoretical limit as well? If so, what is it?

Peter said the empeg will probably run into the limit here

If anyone personally owns enough CDs to fill a 256 GB empeg, they can afford two in their dash

Thanks, so it seems to be similar to IDE in desktops as well.

Yes, IDE between laptop drives and desktop drives is the same. The problem was in the amount of bits set aside to address a drive. At 128gb, the address limit is hit. Maxtor helped to fix this by making the address bit width wider in Ultra 133 controllers and drives.

I thought I heard something about linux possibly able to workaround this limitation if the controller dosen't do it on it's own, but I may be mistaken. If so, the empeg may be able to break that limit.

It *was* mentioned in the other thread that an update to 2.4 of whatever linux installation pieces would bring support (possibly) for drives larger than 128MB (137). That's 48bit instead of 28 I believe. Bruno Posting from the Macworld tradeshow floor - nearly finished setup (man this place is freezing!)
