Can anybody in California who has received his give me an idea of how much extra money we're talking about?

Shipping to the US is US$48 by FedEx (usually before 10:30am next day delivery).

We now have a harmonized code which SHOULD zero rate the product for duty. That sounds a bit too good to be true, but FedEx have put their customs guys on the case and we believe it is the best code for the product. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who received their player in the last two weeks - were you charged duty, and if so how much?

We're working on getting a binding tarriff decision for the player which will mean that individual US customs officers cannot arbitrarily invent a duty rate.

Sorry this all sounds so vague, but that's how customs work - every officer seems to have a different perspective.

I received my unit quite awhile ago, but I was only charged $48 S+H, no duty.

I got it in one day from Cambridge, UK to San Diego, CA, USA.

I got mine in two days from the date shipped, and no duty was charged. It would have been one day, but in the words of fedex.com "pkg. cleared after plane departed."

I dont know baout you guys in the States, but here in Australia i got hit by 22% sales tax (and some some bastard reason, they raise the value of your product by 20% before applying the tax too ;(( )

luckily i described my empeg as computer equipment and only got hit with 22%, if i had described it as car audio it would have been 32% !!

Even so, it added another AU$450 to my overall cost, taking it over the AU$2000 mark. Its still worth it though *grin*

About a week after receiving my empeg I received a statement in the mail from FedEx which showed that no duty had been charged to import the empeg into the U.S.

The merchandise description was "PRINTED CIRCUIT ASMBS,8469-72 / 8473503000". The date on the customs form was Sep 17, 1999.

Got my invoice/duties maiing from FedEx Wednesday. Total taxes and duties on the 10GB empeg shipped to me last month in California: $0.00. Looks like the guys at empeg did a great job defining the equipment to Customs!

I am also from Australia and got done for 37% (= 22% sales tax + 15% duty)

In the packaging for my unit there was a "Product Description for Customs Use" stating: "The empeg car player is a digital music player designed primarily for use in the car."

That didn't give me a lot of choice.
