I'm running 2.0b7 dev with mlord's kernel and I'd like to leave the com port hooked up when I have the unit sitting on my desk. BUT, when I reboot my computer, it reboots the Rio.

Has anyone else seen this?

I keep forgetting to ask you about this one in person, Tod. Is the USB port plugged in as well at this time?

Can you narrow it down to just-serial, just-USB, or must-be-both? There was a known bug for a long time where having the PC power down with the USB port connected would lock up the player. Dunno if that's still supposed to be there or not.

ISTR that this was a problem with the USB chip on the mk1. It shouldn't, therefore, affect the mark2 in any way. I could be wrong, though.

Ah, that makes sense.

Okay, then, what about this:

Remember that once upon a time, there was a bug in one of the 1.1 alphas where if you sent too many characters on one line into the serial port, the player would crash? Perhaps this is something similar that Tod's noticing because his serial port is doing garbage at reboot time?

It's possible. There's no easy way to find out, unless he hooks up a serial terminal to his serial line.

It certainly doesn't happen when I reboot my computer with the serial port plugged in.

Of course, the simplest solution is to never reset the computer .

He's doing Windows software development on a '98 box. Reboots are a fact of life.

I HAVE narrowed it to the serial port. But I DO keep the USB plugged in at all times.

I have another machine here, I'll just set it up to read the output from the serial port and see if I can't get an offending log.

Sun machines (and a few others) drop to PROM mode when they receive break signals on the serial port. Almost all DTEs send a pulse down the serial line when they are turned off, which is interpreted as a break by the Suns. This is a FAQ amongst Sun newbies. The Empeg isn't doing something similar, is it?
