Hi again guys
I'm on day 1 of learning about this wonderful toy, and one of my concerns regards retrieving mp3 files from the device (so that I only need 1 copy of all my mp3s on my PC and the other copy is on the Empeg).

I noticed on the FAQ that it wasn't until v2.00-beta7a that files could be retrieved.

I also just noticed, reading through the search results on "AutoHijack" that you can FTP or even HTTP to the Empeg and transfer files back and forth.

Is this one of a number of different ways of transfer, or is it HiJack itself that makes file retrieval possible at all?

You can fetch files from the player using either Emplode, JEmplode (a replacement for Emplode written in Java) or using ftp/http with a HiJack kernel.

Emplode/JEmplode do not require a HiJack kernel to allow them to download files.

One think to remember is that any mp3 files you download from the player will not have any changes you have made to it's tags via Emplode present in the file itself.

Can you only copy mp3 files back and forth with emplod, or can I backup other files to the empeg - I've got a 60gb coming, and I ain't got anywhere near that much mp3 stuff.

With Emplode you can only copy mp3/wav/wma files. I don't know about JEmplode.

Using HiJack and ftp you can of course copy anything you like.

jEmplode supports MP3 and (just recently) WMA. You can actually drop any files you want onto it, but only MP3 and WMA will get the proper tags set.
