I have a Mk2 empeg now in my car.
Now if it gets nicked its covered upto £500 on my car insurance, BUT i have a £350 excess, so i'll only see £150.
I'm looking to get it insured seperatly and wondered if anyone here would have any recomendations for seperate insurance?
I live in the UK by the way
Cheers Nobbie

Just had my car nicked at the weekend, I was due to install my amp and empeg this week, so its a good thing I hadnt...
They wrote it off unfortunately.
I had a Home Cinema sub in the boot with an invertor powering it.
The insurance company claimed that it wasnt car audio equipment and so we had a nice long arguement about it and they finally caved.
This starts to make me think about what they would say if I tried to explain what the empeg is all about...
Anyway, your best bet is to check out MAX Power et al, as they are bound to have adverts for it. I know you can get a separate policy for it and with an amp, speakers and empeg its going to be more than £500 worth.
On another note are you sure about your excess? Mine is £400 but only if I toast the car. The theft and write off is only a £100 excess.

"Oh, that's too bad, guv'nor. See, you opted for the "never pay" policy. Which is great if you never claim, but you had to go and claim..."

I have carefully saved my receit which shows that I paid £1200 (I think it was?) for the empeg player. If it gets stolen, I'll be in a better position to at least get back what a new/used one will cost.

This might sound like a stupid question.....but why would your Empeg ever be left in the car when you are not there?
After all, it's a pull out unit, so there's no reason for it to be in the car when you aren't.
For me, that was one of the additional benefits of the Empeg. The only car stereo I've never had nicked was my first one, and guess what, it was a pull out.
These days, the ba***rds will nick the rear half of it, even if you've removed the front panel bit. I've been lucky in that all my previous car stereos have come with their own insurance. This pays out as long as you can produce the removable front panel.
With regards to the Empeg, if you don't leave it in the car, then you can add it to your home insurance. If it then gets nicked from your person (when you are carrying it, say), then the home insurance coughs up.
WIth my policy, the Empeg is covered for theft and accidental damage, both inside and outside of the house (but not if it's left in the car).
This might be a cheaper way of getting it insured.

Scenario: You have parked the convertible on the beach, playing music from the empeg car while you ********* with the girl of your choise, and suddenly the car is gone.
Scenario: You go downtown to pick up girls, park the car somewhere strategic, and may get lucky and pick up some girl you want to "show your cool stereo", and It's *not* cool to go dragging around the large bag, and it's not quite the same if she says "yes(!)" and you pull the stereo from your "handbag" to show her.
Scenario: you take all your kids to a shopping mall, and planning to shop a lot so your hands won't be free to carry the empeg (and it's slightly too heavy to dangle from a finger). You can't leave it at home either, because then the kids will be screaming all the way there and back.

This is exactly my experience. I still have my full-pull-out CD player from many years ago, but the empeg replaced a faceplate-security unit that got stolen.

Some interesting scenarios there Marius. I'd just love to be a fly on the wall when you are trying to explain that first one to the insurance people when they want to know how your car got stolen
In actual fact, the only one of those scenarios likely to happen to me is number three.
Number one is out as my wife doesn't like it when the sand gets on her bits
For why number two is out, see above. I can't see my wife being too impressed if I'm going downtown to pick up girls.
I guess I could always get one of the kids to hold the Empeg, and if they drop it, the insurance company will cover it as it's accidental damage.

This might sound like a stupid question.....but why would your Empeg ever be left in the car when you are not there?
Cause i don't like getting sand in the empeg at the beach.
Cause i don't like carrying extra weight when i go tramping for a week in the middle of nowhere.
Cause i don't like carrying it in my backpack when i go skiing and risking damaging it when i crash
Cause i don't like looking like a dork when i go shopping carrying it around.
Cause my friends would think i'm a freak if the first thing i did when i visit them is ask them if they have a secure place i could put my car stereo while we have dinner.
Cause i'm lazy and the "download all your tunes once and then forget about it" aspect of the empeg appeals to me
In summary i drive my car to many places that are not my home or place of work, and it is not convienient to take the empeg out of the car inmost of those places. I don't even think it's convienient to do it at home or work.

Here is what I do I take it out and put it under my seat so no one can steal it. Then I found an old wiring harness and I cut the wires and now when I leave the car the empeg goes under the seat and a stick the wires inside the sleeve with the sut ends hanging out so it looks like my car has already been busted into and the goods taken.

See my message in the for sale forum for something that will secure your empeg if you want to leave it in the car.

My girlfriends camera was in the camre. It wasnt covered on the car insurance, she hasnt sorted out home contents yet, and the credit card protection plan ran out 4 days before the theft.
Ive managed to get back nearly all of my money from the insurance company (surprised me!) but now she's stuck with nowhere to go.
With regads to the other posts, if I had had my empeg fitted to the car, that would have been stolen too. I only popped out for 15 minutes. Its safe to say that in my new car, it will NEVER be left in there, and I will be getting a removable steering wheel

So, how does that lock fit the empeg when you put it in the sled?
I guess you could have it attached on a long retractable cable, so it's tied to something secure behind the dash, and can hang out the hole in the sled when you have your empeg inside for a software upgrade. Then when you bring it back out after the upgrade you put the lock in and slide it back into the sled. Is there a hole in the back of the sled to allow the lock to fit?

I'm not sure it will fit, but I haven't actually tried.

I think the game plan here was simply to provide a way to lock the player when it's sitting in the passenger footwell, rather than in the sled.
However, ISTR that somebody on this board hacked on their mk1 to add a laptop locking hole to it, and then added a solenoid to the sled, so that it was locked whenever the ignition was off.
Of course, I might have dreamt this. Even so, it's still a good idea.
