Hey everyone,

I'm having trouble with the seek tool. I encode VERY long audio files, and its great to zip through them with the roto knob. But recently I've been having problems with it...

Say my file is two hours long. At a random time (maybe 25 minutes into the file), the knob will no longer work to fast forward. It acts like its hitting the end of the file, though it just loops the previous minute or so and does it again.

If I let it play normally, or switch to a different 'info' setting and fast forward, the file is fine and it advances past the problem spot.

Anyone have any advice here?

could this maybe be a problem with bad VBR headers? Check out this link in the faq.

later,

Nope, that's not it... They are encoded at a variety of different bitrates, non of them variable, all of them low (16-64).

Thanks, though!

16-64 kps? That IS low! I thought the release note to the 2.00betas mention that playback of low bit rate mp3's is a known bug?

There are issues with very low bitrate WMA files (at the 16K end of the scale). This doesn't apply to MP3.

Worth checking... I'll switch my settings to grab the stuff into a 56k file instead of the 12-24 I'm using now, maybe that'll solve it.

Thanks for all the help,

Is there a reason you can not FFWD/RRWD with the right and left arrow keys in the Seek Tool like you can in most parts of the player (ie click and hold fast forwards).

On a 5hr file each click of the knob is 35sec and a little fine tuning would be nice.

BTW the Seek Tool is cool and gratifies my habit to grab the knob to FFWD.

If you could FF/RW with the left and right arrows then you wouldn't be able to skip track or jump to the next passage would you?????

You can still use the remote control, or as you have noticed the rotary knob.

I am currently working on some enhancements to make make each knob click allow for finer grained seeking resolution.

A steering remote works like the IR remote in the Seek Tool (i.e. the same as in other info modes).
